I want to change the differential oil..

go to home depot or lowes and get yourself some clear 3/8" plastic hose and use one end into the fill hole while the other end you just attached a funnel to it and pour away until the gear oil overflows the fill plug. Make sure to remove the fill plug first before the drain plug. Don't want to drain all the oil out to find that you can't break loose the fill plug.

With my RX300, that rancid, old egg smell is something I would love to attach (if one could attach smells along with photos), it will never leave your mind. Interesting thing was that the smell only appeared with my transfer case up front, but the old oil in the rear had no smell, but plenty of crud on the drain plug.
That smell is from a friction modifier additive, the stuff really stinks bad and you don't want to get any on your person.

[QUOTE=whazzzzuup;2708791]I changed the differential fluid, along with the engine oil, ATF, and PS fluid. By the look/condition of the fluids, they were overdue for a change. Here are some pictures taken during the differential fluid change. Some advice: loosen the fill bolt (top) first before you remove the drain bolt. This will ensure that you will be able to fill the differential later on in the process. If you get the drain bolt loosened and remove all the fluid and cannot get the fill bolt open, then you will be out of luck (unable to fill it)!
Not really, you might be able to get yourself out of such a disaster by parking it on ramps or a steep hill backwards.. just a thought..lol

You can pump it out with a little pump or something.
I read somewhere on a Volvo board that they actually deleted the drain bolt on the XC90 diff so that only the dealership can change the fluid. And when you still want to do it yourself you need to pump it out.
