Default choosing stall speed

So how does one go about choosing the stall speed for a torque converter?

They suggest use a 2800 stall (standard from Precision Industries) for the N/A GS. I have heard of many here having the stall set at 3000 and some even at 3200! Obviously, the higher stall the more powerful the low-end power will be but with added heat/stress on the transmission. Also, some say the higher stall you go drivability might be adversly affected. I just had mine set at 2900 just to be different. lol.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, but what I really want is the how to choose not what everyone esle is doing or is reccomended.

I am wondering if you use your cruising rpm at 80 miles per hour and then base the stall speed X rpm higher or lower than that.

I got a noob question lol, I've been driving mostly standard tranny cars since I started driving and I'm not that familiar with auto trannies, stall and torque converters. Can someone tell me how it all ties together. Does the stall allow you to build boost?

Yes it actually allows you to build boost rather quickly. I actually have to ease into otherwise it will creep up real fast and I'll just sit there spinning tires..

Morris I don't have a technical answer as to how to choose which stall is best for you. I went with what was recommended by PI for my motor set up. The only thing I can pass along is that the driveability of a 3200stall is great, very very liitle lag. I was very nervous but it really does drive great with the luxury of having that quick power when slammed or on the highway cruising at higher rpm gives you that stomp power at the tap of the pedal. I would guess that you should look at what rpm your boosting at if our boosting in the 3500rpm than I would think try to get something closer to that. I'm sure someone will be able to explain this better..

Well here is the basis of my question, I am looking to change out my tranny, I have someone that has a package that includes a 3500 rpm stall converter. I am trying to determine if I need to have it reset to a lower stall speed before I install it.

My guess is yes for the following reasons.

1. I cruise at 80mph around 2200 rpm, my guess is that with the converter slipping up to 3500 I will have way to much heat and fry the tranny.

2. I also have boost coming on below 2K rpm
