Jeff,
You said you went through 4 -- 5speed trannies. How did these trannies fail (i..e. launching, on the 1/2 shift, etc...). Did you pull the trannies apart to see what components failed?
On another note, any new on that IS you talked about coming out of Toyomoto?
Happy New Year guys!

Here is a fairly off topic question. How difficult would it be to pull out an Auto tranny, and put in a 6 spd? I couldn't find a stick when I went to buy my car, and because of external pressures I had to either buy a car that week or not at all. If it is possible what is the likely cost?

well to put in a 6spd getrag... first off you either have to find a used one or buy a new one.. new ones are 5k plus other needed parts,,. so I would say the whole conversion with tranny and parts would have to be damn near 9k if not more..

SC300TURBO
...I'm replying to your post about a month ago. Assuming your numbers are correct, I could spend $10,500 w/Toyomota and have a 340rwhp IS. However, I would have no warranty, if I had problems then I'd have to go to Florida(from Atlanta) to get them fixed, if I were to wreck the car then my $10,500 is gone. I am fearful of BMW reliability though, but I have heard that the newest M's are far better. I'm with you though, if all things were equal I'd rather have a 340rwhp IS300 than an M3. There's just too many "if's".

I don't think that I'd be willing to drive from Atlanta to FL in order to have my car serviced. Then what do you do if something even worse happens, like you can't drive the car. Are you going to be willing to tow the car the entire distance (I'm guessing a trip like that would cost a min of a grand). Thinking about that you have to it into consideration.

if you keep the settings where there suppossed to be......and take care of your car you wont have issues.....if something does happen a local mechnaic can proablly take care of repairs...but the intial set up and install is the most vital part........you want to play your gonna pay...but its worth the expense.i promise...Jeff

A few questions for those who are knowledgeable:
1) How is the VVTI disabled? Does it need to be disabled when turbocharging the IS? How is it actuated?
2) Are the stock cylinder head bolts reusable (i.e. are they torque-to-yield bolts?)
3) Will a 2JZ-GE turbo manifold for a SC300 work on an IS300 -- it should bolt up--I'm just wondering about clearance issues.
Thanks!!

well I beleive you can shim the VVTI for it to be disabled kinda like they do with the VVTI-L
I could be wrong on that tho..
the headbolts from what I know are resuable but if you are going turbo I would replace them.
the SC300 manifold well that is one that jEff would know for sure.....
