Default DIY cold air box...why?

I have seen members complete DIY projects where they "box off" the area where their intake filter (on their air intake) is. I understand that they are trying to further block hot engine bay air but in the end isn't this the same thing (functionality wise) as the stock air box with a hi-flow filter? How would this DIY serve better as far as performance gains? I am thinking of doing this DIY and would like to know if it is a waste of time. Thanks.

stock intake has smaller diameter piping, plus a resonator. so it's not the same thing.

I am in the process of beginning a cold air box. I had to talk myself in and out of this project many times before I decided I would. I basically ended up with that exact idea. A hi flow stock replacement filter does have more surface area than a cone style filter but, the stock piping is smaller compared to an aftermarket intake. Eitherway, I already have an injen intake and I am too lazy to sell it so I might as well make a CAB. It doesn't cost alot of money and it shouldn't be difficult so why not?

Are you going to run an additional tube/pipe into this box? such as a pipe routed to the inside of the foglight area acting as a forced induction?

No I am planning on using the stock airscoop to connect to the box. Haven't thought about that though but I might consider it.
