Default How can you tell if you have an exhaust leak?

I hear an faint ticking noise sometimes and/or a slight hissing noise coming from the engine or front of the car. Can this be an exhaust leak? Could this make you lose power?

If it's a real exhaust leak it will cause you to loose power! It could be a vacum leak too. Those will sound close to the same sometimes! Have a professional look at it! GL and let me know how it turns out!

Hissing can be a vaccum leak as kevs98GS4 mentioned, especially on start up. Exhaust leaks are usually right off on one of the manifolds themsevles or in areas of the exhaust piping where there are joints. If you turn on your vehicle and go by these joints you might be able to feel some of the hot air coming out of the exhaust keeping your hand a few inches away.

Most exhaust leaks have a pulsing sound to it.

Hissing generally mean vacuum hose leak, or something is disconnected.

It could possibly be your intake hissing?

park your car next to a wall from the side you belive the exhaust leak is comming from and you should be able to hear more clearly if there is a exhaust leak because the wall will bounce the sound back to you. make sure you rev your car a few times.
to check for vacum leaks. get your self a 3/8 to 1/2 hose and put it next to your ear and try looking for that noise in the engine section.

Listen to the sound under acceleration. If it gets louder, you have an exhaust leak, but if it goes away, you have something else. I lost one of the bolts holding my header to the y-pipe and it made my car go from a night deep rumble to a Chrysler La Baron with a draging muffler. You will know an exhaust leak when you experience one.
