Downsides to an aftermarket torque converter?

Question Downsides to an aftermarket torque converter?

I am just wondering what the downsides are to the aftermarket torque converters out there...driveability, gas mileage, rear diff lifespan. Also anyone have any simple explination of how they work...or what is diff from stock that causes the performance increase?
