Default IS tanabe exhaust catback or what?

I;m confused. Is Tanabe Medallion Touring exhaust considered a cat back type or what?

From what I read in the forum threads here, it takes 20 mins in average to install it and some1 said that if shops charges more than 70 it is a rip off!!

But, when I called several muffler shops, they said it takes at least 35 mins, some shops said it would take more than 1 hour and they are charging me $100+ for installation.

Is this correct? Please advise

ok... i just installed mine 3 days ago.

I am no where close to be a car mechanic, I don't know how to fix car. I am just a normal guy that know how to use the normal tools. This exhaust installation is real simple, i mean really simple. Simply bolt and unbolt, when you get the exhaust, and you go under the car, you will figure out how to do it. If you know how to change tire, pretty much you know how to install this exhaust.

With 2 jack stand, it took me about 40-45 mins to put it on.

The local shop here is charging me $50.

I wanted to get it done in a shop because of the lift.

My friends can do it in their garage and they said its a simple 30-45mins installation but I still decided to get it done in the shop for the convenience.

when they asked me is it axle back, catback, or he mentioned 1 more type.

I said catback, did I answer correctly? Then he said actually it is not easy, need 40 mins+ to do it, thus he charges 100+

Well it what we call a resonator back or simple axle back system..

If I was tired or hurt.. I would bring it to a muffler shop..

Most I would pay is $50... its not going to take more than 30 mins to install..

its not catback...i just installed and it took me 20 min. if you look under your car, basically just past your rear tires from the back of the car, its closer to the passenger side you will see where it bolts up. the Tanabe is a 2 piece system where the factory is 1 piece. hope that helps, i wouldnt pay more then 35$ to have it installed. a shop can do this in 5-10 min...once they have it on a lift!

thanks for all your inputs. I will call the shops back tomorrow and tell them it's an axle back and not catback.

Hopefully they get it right this time

I thought this was a resonator back exhaust. I jacked up one side of the rear and went to town.

tools needed:

2 - 14MM Wrench or sockets
wd40

took me 12 min to do the install.

yup, 14mm socket or box/open wrench...but you will need 2 of them to make the job easier.

Seems like a simple enough job. I just hope mine hasn't fused together with rust down there. I've been putting the exhaust changeover off until the mufflers have a problem. My GF would kill me if I get them changed for no reason. Yeah, she's that **** about it..........very conservative and likes the IS the way it is. When the time comes, she says it will be ok to get them but the exhaust will have to be very quiet or near stock. So I figured a Tanabe may be an alternative or perhaps go with Lexus version of their sport muffler.

Its an axle-back, that is why it is so quick to install. Although, a catback wouldnt be too much harder.

I just got my f-sport exhaust. It should be coming next week. Just got a question, do I just take off those 2 bolts? After removing that bolt does the whole stock axle back come off? Theres no other bolts to take off? Thanks.

Other than those two bolts your just going to have to disconnect the mufflers from the hangers. 30-45min installation tops. The only reason i took mine to a muffler shop is because i had them cut out the secondary cats and resonator and weld a str8 pipe...so my Tanabe axle back...became a catback.
