Default Did you get a ticket with your aftermarket exhaust?

I'm thinking of what exhaust to buy but what i don't want to get a state ticket for having too loud of an exhaust. There are many areas that don't allow ear drumming exhausts and some areas do. When you respond/vote please state:

1.What kind of exhaust you have or has had
2.Where you live
3.How many tickets you received.
4.How did you deal with the ticket.

(Info on exhausts from Here)

1.What kind of exhaust you have: Tanabe MT
2.Where you : bay area, SJ
3.How many tickets you received: for aftermkt exhaust? None. I dont think we would get pulled over for that, excepr if u have a straight pipe I guess. But, nah, not with tanabe. it is a pretty quiet exhaust!!
4.How did you deal with the ticket.: N/A

Conclusion: get Tanabe MT!!

1.Tanabe Medallion Touring
2.Oregon
3.Zero and planning on keeping it that way
4.N/A
5.Just don't step it on it hard when you see a cop car next to you! Not to mention Tanabe is quiet enough that it really wouldn't be considered as a noise violation

The aftermarket intakes (except JoeZ) make more noise then the exhaust! Not to worry.

1. HKS Hi-Power
2. Northern VA
3. Tickets for exhaust - just one.
4. It was easier to pay the $45 fine than fight it. I got pulled over by the local sheriff (guy had to be 65+). There's an obscure VA law that says the exhaust must not be different from OEM-style. I've never had a problem with my exhaust before and I was driving calmly at the time.

That's a good point. The intake I made for my RX300 is louder now than my exhaust, which I quieted down further today.

Lets say i go with a HKS from lexus. Would i get a ticket for it being to loud even though its sold by Lexus? If so and i would to fight the ticket, would i win since Lexus sells it as a option?

As long as the exhaust/intake meets california carb rating( or w/e) it can be installed on your car and shouldnt have to many problems with getting tickets?

I'm not to knowledgeable on the laws of aftermarket parts, so help me out if im wrong.

Actually, in this case, you could prove that it's an OEM part, in which it *should* be legal (depending on state laws).

However, you would probably still have to fight it in court, vs. being able to state your case to the ticketing officer.

I once called the VA state police regarding a modification (clear lenses), and the trooper's response was if it didn't come on the car from the factory, then it is considered illegal.

My question for you: was the ticket for "improper equipment"? If so, you're definitely right that it's easier to just pay the small fine, because improper equipment is NOT considered a moving violation in VA (and, therefore, doesn't affect your insurance rates). Also, the courts charge you their $75-100 court fees whether you fight the ticket or just pay it. So, you're really just saving the cost of the fine itself, not associated court fees .

Yep. Although, it has been a while since that ticket, and I haven't had any problems since.

Well there is nothing illegal with that exhaust since it is an OEM part. It's partly the reason why I'm going with the F-Sport exhaust myself. Sure it costs a lot more than other brands but that's expected of Lexus parts.
