So in CA, what could happen if you removed them? How would law enforcement know that they were removed? I assume there would be no way of knowing unless they put your car on a lift. Also, can't you just put them back on when you go to the dealer or get smogged?

Step 1 - it is illegal for any shop to remove a working catalytic converter. Fines can range as high as $50k.
Step 2 - The cat is welded in, and would have to either be cut out, or the entire section where the cat lives would have to be replaced to keep the old system intact for smog testing.
Step 3 - If you get a roadside inspection (where you drive through the infrared beam) and fail, you will be putting on the cat much sooner. If you get stopped by the police and they suspect you are not running cats - this was a common occurrence in Sacramento when I lived there because of the street racing problems - they will do a roadside inspection for cats with a mirror under the car. No cats = big ticket.
Will the authorities "know" you're not running your cats? No. Might they suspect because your bumper has black soot on it? Sure will. CA got $6M for enforcing vehicle code because of street racing, so cops are looking, and looking hard in some neighborhoods.
Have fun with that. It's just one of the reasons I left California permanently.

post in this thread. Member sincityIS has found a place to sell just the mid pipes. You just will replace and not need to cut or modify anything.

Okay so has anyone removed the 2nd cat with what ever mid pipe you are using and replaced the front with a "HIGH" flow cat?
And why would our car not pass emissions with the front cats still in place?? I am sure we are fine we just might no be ULEV but still be with in guides right? If we have one cat on the car if your state does spot checks, feel bad for these peeps, then you are with in state guides right?
