Changing internals on (non-FI) GS400/430...has any1 done it?

I suggest you start with bolt-ons first. Starting with engine internal work is like saying you want to get buff, but you don't want to work out, so insted you are going to intake lots of protein, since it helps built muscles
Not going to help much if you don't start where you should.

1. You want some extra power = bolt-ons
2. That's not enough you want more power = FI
3. Looking for serious power = internal work to handle the high hp out put you are looking for, otherwise it is wasted money that could have been spent on something better.

Many bolt-on items everyone already knows about including superchargers and turbo chargers but not too many speak about or deal with engine internals. I too would be interested in modifying (the engine) what I already have; not spend MEGA buck on a brand new built longblock. If I had a ton of $$$ coming out my ears I would definitely go this route though. lol.
I understand what you are saying, but you should focus on using your engine's capabilities first before dumping a ton of cash on internal stuff that will most likely not be cost effective for what you are trying to accomplish.
