^^^ That's there to reduce heat loss prior to the secondary catalytic converters (that have been cut out).

It also acts as sound dampening or absorbing device...

Catlytic converters have to get hot quickly and stay hot. The hotter the better. That's why so many manufacturers incorporate cats into their exhaust manifolds to get them as close to the engine as possible. Some manufacturers even dump extra fuel into the cylinders at startup, then pump fresh air into the exhaust to create an actual combusion in the cats during a cold startup.

hey guys..(people who replace their OEM mid-pipe)
I was just wondering if you could still pass the smog check
if you replace your mid-pipe..
I have the Tanabe Exhaust and want to either get the
Megan Mid-pipe or just get a customized mid-pipe
I don't really know much about these stuff so
I'll really appreciate if anyone can school me on this
thanks in advance

questions like this never come to my head. Here in Florida we dont have any emissions inspections nor are the cops picky about it. theres probably a law passed about this stuff, but it never arises, so theres no conern on my end.

On The shielding of the midpipe to make the sec. cat more effective::

I talked to some guy that has a shop. he has a drifting and drag team. he was talking that colder air flows better, and therefore, when you want better performance, the air in the exhaust should be as cold as possible. thats why you see some guys TAPE the midpipe all the way back. Im not sure what is called, but it looks like a tape and it is supposed to disperse heat, so your midpipe stays coolder.

Total BS. Hot air "flows better" because it retains the energy it needs to move the cold air out of the exhaust. The purpose of the wrap isn't to make the exhaust cold, it's to keep the heat in so the exhaust doesn't slow down in the pipe. Its speed is directly related to the heat it retains.

The guy you talked to either doesn't know what he's talking about, or he's lying to you.

Default finally arrived!

upon arrival to my house, i noticed a mangled box at my door step, ill have to thank UPS for their extra care in delivering my package safely. But after a long 2.5 week wait, i can finally install my megan midpipe. Now i just need to wait for my car to cool down a tad.
