Just cut a big hole in the middle of the box and give your joez intake to me.

Are you talking about the intake tube....or just the intake filter box? I was told that cutting more holes in the intake box will give you more air, but hot air from the engine compartment (hot air is less dense than cold air...denser air gives you more O2 to burn, thus more power)....unless you route some kind of cold air tube to the extra hole that you cut out....I'm not sure if you really need that much more air because the ecu might not know what to do with it....it would have to be reprogramed....the Joe Z intake tube....the one that goes from the air box to the intake manifold only serves to "clean up" the air turbulance caused in the OEM intake tube (no ridges...no turbulance). This might all be BS for all I know, but it made sense to me at the time....lol

The stock airbox/tube already provide more volume of air than the engine is capable of using.

The extra hole adds absolutely nothing whatsoever but sound.

There's at least 1 or 2 threads if you search on cutting your own extra hole if you want the sound. It won't add any performance though.

A group of us actually tested an F-Sport intake against the Joe Z setup (box with and without the extra holes) at a 1/4 mile drag strip last year, and we consistently got better times with the Joe Z setup (box without the holes) over F-Sport setup - so unless you're looking to go slower, I'd leave the box the way it is.

^Yes sir - runs were performed repeatedly within 10 minutes of each other, and the order of the runs was reversed to make sure heat soak/cool off wasn't an issue, too.

Given neither intake adds more than 5 hp, tops, I'm not sure how a statistically significant difference in performance is even possible between the two.

I'd certainly be curious to see the data though.

I didn't say it was significant, I said it was consistent. The Joe Z + stock (closed) intake box posted faster ET's every single run.

As I say, I'd love to see the data.

ETs are pretty useless for judgment of power gain/loss, trap speed would be what you'd look at.

I believe ya. Seems to only make sense. Keep the engine bay air out of the intake tract. So it doesn't give you as much noise, but noise does not equal power. All the quickest/fastest quarter mile times posted have been done with the JOEZ or stock setup.
