per his sig, he has a 2000 GS4...meaning that yes he does have e-shift.

perhaps this is specific to 98-00 GS4's?

Nothing helpful but I feel like since I read all 3 pages I'll throw in my 2 cents! When cold, my car holds 1st gear just a little longer but the shift into 2nd isn't rough or hard. 99 GS4 w/ e-shift.

i'm on a 99 GS4. Have the same 'issue,' but it only happens if i don't warm up properly, even in summer. Gotta let it run at least five mins. More in winter. 114K here.

Mine is the same. 99 GS4 w/ 151k. I'm going to try replacing the tranny mount and any rear end bushings that I can find to see if it helps the hard shift.

I have an 03 GS430 and mine doesn't shift hard out of first at all. I paid close attention to it today. Started car up, was on my way in about 30 seconds. My car shifts outnof 1st, 2nd, and 3rd all around 2000 RPM. 4th to 5th shifts about 1800 RPM all under casual city type driving. Either way, my 1st to 2nd shift has never been hard at all. My car had 137K miles on it. Could be an early model GS thing as mine has DBW so pehaps the transmission ECU is also tuned differently.

I just read in a motor trend article today, that 99 gs had a recall (3 to be exact) one is for a tranny issue with cold weather. I'm assuiming this could be for 98-00 gs series. I haven't looked more into it cause I'm on my iPhone

update
here's the article
