Mine have been soaking in penetrating catalysts and oils for the last day and still won't budge, even broke the only screwdriver that would grip them well. Talked to someone with an impact hammer, that might be my only option at this point but haven't used one and not sure how safe that'd be.

Would love to replace this filter as my car has 175,000 but it's not looking real good right now.
an impact screw driver is what you need. those bolts have factory locktight.

I wish I got that kind of mileage. Only at 139k too! Replaced spark plugs, cleaned the TB, cleaned the MAF, replaced the air filter, and replaced the fuel filter and I still get way less miles per tank than that.

Tried that, broke the tip off a Matco bit. About to give up and try to sell the new filter.

if you are talking about the 8 screws to attach to the tank,

Use a socket instead of a screwdriver, and it will come off pretty easily without an issue, and not strip the screws.

At least for me it did, you'll have maybe 100times more surface area where the tool is applying torque compared to screwdriver slots.

I think it's either 8 or 10mm I forgot. Just go bigger or smaller in metric till it fits.

I'm about 99% sure it's 8mm. I had no problems at all with a socket wrench. You'll need an extension though.

it's 8mm. I had a hard time taking them off when i try to use a screw driver.. not too much grip and not enough force to take them out.. I use 8mm deep socket and extension, no effort at all..

Just did this yesterday and have a tip for those wanting to attempt this. There is a metal washer that keeps the sock filter locked onto the bottom of the pump. You have to remove the washer to get the filter off. I used a flathead screwdriver but bent the washer in the process. So I went to home depot and bought some #6 lock washers with internal tooth. Worked fine, so you may want to pick one up before you start this.

as I mentioned before, all of this is covered in the service manual (whereas steps are skipped or not quite accurate in the DIY write ups). It's your car and your prerogative, but my 2cents of advice are to read the service manual steps and don't just rely on DIY write-ups.
