Default Mid pipe question

I just purchased a megan axle back exhaust for my is350. I am not looking for any HP gains just a little sound.

Can someone explain to me what a mid pipe does? I did not buy one but I am wondering if I should.

Does it increase loudness?

No I did not purchase the mid pipe.

All I bought was the axle back.

I guess I'll install it and see if I am satisfied with the loudness.

The mid-pipe is the pipe after the catalytic converter and the right before the mufflers. Aftermarket mid-pipe's focus on relieving back pressure from the engine, and a mid-pipe will make your car louder. I have the Joe Z full catback and it is, in my opinion, considerably louder than stock but this replaces everything from the headers back compared to axle backs.

It makes your exhaust louder, particularly in the midrange when an axle-back exhaust generally tapers off. Here are some sound clips: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/per...a-midpipe.html

The downside is considerably more drone at highway speeds, and it's illegal in some states like California.

It's illegal in all 50 states actually since it's a federal law you are violating.

It's just that some states don't do inspections where they check it.

Is that the law where it says you can't remove ANY working catalytic converter? Even if you're replacing it with a different one (as in the case with Megan midpipes)?

I believe so. You are not allowed to modify or replace a working Cat. I remember reading this on Turbo Magazine.

But if it was somehow damaged by a parking curb or roadkill, then you are allowed to replace it.

^ Yeah, come to think of it I'm pretty sure a rat chewed through my OEM midpipe so I just HAD to get the Invidia. I'm so screwed when I have to go in for a smog check LOL.

Yup. But even if it were damaged you'd have to (legally) replace it with another working cat, not a midpipe.
