Default Exhaust Options revisited :)

Alright guys, here is the issue. I have to buy an exhaust by the end of this week (11-13-10 is my deadline). I have done a ton a research and listened to A LOT of sound clips. But I still get conflicting reports on my research.

Here is what I have: Weapon R Intake W/AEM filter, OBX headers, Megan Racing Midpipe, Resonator delete, and an HKS Hi-power axle back. This is freaking LOUD! to say the least... Even with the HKS silencers it is pretty unbearable as a DD (for me).

My question: What will be the best exhaust for overall quietness/minimum drone, Tanabe Medalion Touring or Borla Axel back? Also considering the rest of my setup, how much quieter will these exhausts actually be? (considering the HKS WITH the silencers).

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I just dont want to drop $7-800 and not have a big difference.

Thanks

Do you want quiet outside or inside? If you want quiet inside either exhaust will do but the key is Dynamat your car. The additional insulation will really help keeping things quiet on the inside.

I say replace the Megan Racing pipe with your stock. You won't lose power or torque, the only difference is that you will lose a few top end horsepower and ft/lbs of torque and gain that on the low end. That should help quiet down your existing exhaust setup significantly.

I would except I dont have ANY stock parts, I would just replace with stock if i had them....kinda sucks lol

Just to simplify it..
Which is quieter (both in and out) Tanabe or Borla?
And how much quieter (approx) will that be than what I have WITH the Hks silencers?
I know its probably not the easiest question...but if anyone has been in a similar situation it would help a ton!
Thanks

But to simplify ... tanabe has good built and is pretty quiet with a nice growl.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I'm going with the tanabe, I talked to a friend who has one on an Is250 and he really likes it.

the thing about the Tanabe tourings on the ISxxx is they are only axle backs. not a full catback i believe. so they have their stock resonators which drowns out the drone but keeps the nice sounding exhaust note. for the gsXXX its a full catback where you will DEFINITELY have a drone thus why i sold mine in less than 2 months time. I went with the tanabe because of all the great reviews but if you value your interior being quiet on highway/long drives i would say either get some nice borla tips (what i have now) or buy the axle back only and weld on some resonators.

i would take it from the parts posted you have a GS3.
First any exhaust system/axle/catback u choose will sound different in a GS3, GS4, GS430. im sure you already know why. so take advice/recommendations only from people with the I6, as they may say its nice but drive a GS430..etc..

Second from the parts you posted, you have NO noise suppression/dampening what so ever, so no mater which cat back, axleback you go with it will still drone and Possibly Remain loud.

Unless you intend to FI your car, id say ditch the midpipe, install the OEM system from there including stock resonators etc..You then can do a axle back like borla, L-tuned, custom..etc...

the difference in performance will be so small you wont notice it except having Peace and Quite.

Till then i will guarantee that if your looking for near stock sound, no matter what catback/axle back you put on, you will not be happy

I dont care about power really, problem is I dont have stock parts, and my attempts to find any have been unsuccessful. I dont care if there is some drone, I just want to know if it will be less than what I have now. (the tanabe)

Yes it will be less and also change the tone. the Tanabe Touring uses baffling inside the mufflers.

Old skool tanabes like the Hyper used resonators like stock prio to the axle backs/mufflers.

I honestly dont know how much less, could be minimal to a some.

How about introducing a high flow muffler post Cat. or maybe two small ones at the resonator locations. that would yield better results

Heads up, once my exhaust comes in and gets installed (prob by the 25th or so) My HKS Hi-power exhaust and mid-section pipes (w/no resonators) will be for sale. I will post an ad with pics in the classified section.

I dunno if you already purchase your exhaust but I've been doing ALOT of research pertaining to the Tanabe DRONE issues because I've been getting conflicting reports.

So far from what I read in numerous threads, EVERYONE that has a GS300 with the Tanabe MT has "Droning"..
The people with V8's GS400/430's seem to not have any Droning issues..

In your case, i would go with the Borlas for the GS300..
