Default Question About Performance Upgrades

Im pretty much a noob when it comes to performance upgrades, but I want to do some to my IS 350.

Anywayz, was wondering what I can do and still maintain a LEGAL car here in California.

I want the HKS Hi Power exhaust, and I know I need a CAT BACK to keep it Smog approved. But what about headers? Can I change those? Mid pipe?

What else can be done

headers and midpipes are both not carb approved in california. because i think they remove both the primary and secondary cat. Correct me if im wrong. plus we cant do much performance mods. if you want to stay legal, i think all you can do it fsport intake and catback exhaust.

^^ Yup, if you want to stay 100% legal I recommend the F-Sport Intake and Exhaust. The F-Sport Intake, I believe, is the only 2IS intake with CARB certification and any catback exhaust that stays under 95 dB, like the F-Sport, is legal in California. Unfortunately, this will only net you maybe 10 HP, hardly noticeable. If you're going to shell out the money for these mods, do it for looks and sound, not power.

Yup... the F-sport is the only CARB legal intake I'm aware of... probably 3-5 hp there.

Any of the axle-backs are PROBABLY ok in CA from emissions point of view, but you might run into problems with NOISE laws, which I understand can also be kinda pissy in CA.

Tanabe is the quietest commonly available axle-back so probably the safest there... and that's about 7 hp.

And that's... it. For legal hp mods anyway.

Beyond that you can do a few things that can use the hp better (lighter wheels for example) but nothing much else to add more hp.

Kurtz, you forgot about the 35 HP that you can unlock at the dealership by asking a mechanic to flip a switch.

So go with the F Sport Intake, not the K&N.

HKS makes a catback right? I really want HKS

hks never made a cat-back exhaust system (read: an exhaust system that replaces all the piping aft of the catalytic converters).

the only two offerings that HKS made are:

1. the lexus HKS exhaust system, which is a predecessor of the f-sport system.
2. HKS's own hi-power system.

both are axle-back systems (read: exhaust system that replaces the exhaust piping aft of the rear axles).

You can always get a joe-z intake pipe and a drop in filter.

So you want a legal exhaust, but have decided on an illegal intake?

You can search for EO numbers here:
http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...es/amquery.php

Go to list of executive orders by device, select sort by manufacturer, then select air filter/intake modification.

You'll find that while Injen has an EO for their IS300 intake they do not have one for the 250/350.

Nobody does, other than F-sport/Lexus.

Doesn't the Injen intake give you even less power the the F-Sport/Joe Z anyway?

Just get the F-Sport Intake/Exhaust if you want to be within the law ApokC.
