So you are getting the car to turn over, thats good. Now you need to check fuel and spark. First off you could jack the car up, use jack stands and creep under it by the gas tank, have wife girl friend, friend what evere turn the key to the run position not the start position. Try to listen for the fuel pump to come on for that 3-5 sec prime period. If you can hear the fuel pump turn on and run then its not the fuel relay etc. Then you need to check for fuel at the fuel rail, no good way to test this with out a fuel guage. You could undo one line and have someone blip the key forward for a sec and see if fuel comes out. (fyi try to have it dump into a cup or something not all over the car). If you are getting fuel to the rail, then move on to checking spark, you could get a voltage tester that you can pulg into the coilpack wireing harnes to see if the cois are getting power, or you could remove one of the coilpacks and a spark plug, put the spark plug into the coil pack socket and ground on the engine and turn the engine over while observing the open plug for spark. (these are very primitive ways to check for spark). If the plug is producing a visible spark then thats not the problem most likely. try those first then get back with us again we will move on to TPS MAF and faulty grounds.

I had kind of the same problem the other day also, I thought the EFI fuse was a spare (don't ask me what i was thinking, but I didn't check first) so after accidentally and unknowingly removing the EFI fuse the car "started" in kind of the same way you are explaining. After figuring out what I had done 3 heart attacks later I put the fuse back and cleared the CEL everything was fine. Check the EFI fuse and see if it is ok or not.
