It's no different than changing your engine oil regularly, it breaks down and doesn't protect as well. 2 qts of Type T-IV every 8k isn't going to break the bank and it's worth the piece of mind. Changing tranny fluid is often one of the most overlooked preventative maintenance procedures.

The previous owner of my car took the car to Lexus for maintenance. So the tranny fluid was changed according to the manual, which is a drain/fill every 30K miles or something like that.
When I bought the car I wanted to make sure I have good fluid in my tranny, so I have doing drain&fills every 5K miles. 3 times till now. The fluid looks nice and red, so I'll start spacing out the drain&fills from now on.

what exactly does it say? A lot of times messedup trannys are due to the fluid not being changed. Id at least .. at LEAST do it every 100k, a lot of people go 150 without doing it at all but dang.
Personally id do it every 2-3 years or 50k miles, drain and refill. youll get a lot of other opinions

Not negative just bluntly honest.. I may try a joke here there
Again, just being bluntly honest, didn't you want to Get rid of the speed governor and go 150mph plus? and Now the Everlasting Tranny fluid.. I guess the drain plug was designed for looks. I understand being new to cars as you seem to be may spark a lot of questions, but at least have them make some common sense.. Education is key in Life, remember that.

I am surprised any members on CL told you the fluid doesn't need replacing. There are plenty of threads about how & when & with which fluid to drain&fill the tranny fluid.
Just make sure the fluid keeps it "red" color. This would mean a drain&fill every 20K miles or something. (yours is black, so do a few drain&fills in the beginning)
Also having a sens of humor will help when being on CL. Don't take things too personal. And you'll enjoy hanging around here.

Good thread..... Didn't know doing a flush or drain/refill often is bad. I somewhat agree because after I did a drain and refill, I noticed that when I accelerate then for example the traffic light all of a sudden turn red which means I'd have to press hard on the brake, its as if the gear stays on neutral or just plain slipping. When I proceed to go, the gear would then catch to engage the car to move.
I was thinking of doing a flush next time as the tranny fluid is like chocolate brown looking and it is very easy to do anyway. When I purchased the car about 2 years ago, the previous owner gave me all the services and the only thing that hasn't been done to the car was a tranny flush so thats one of the first things I did to keep up with the maintenance. Wish I did the flush to begin with instead of doing a drain/refill tho.

It takes about 30+ quarts or something to drain and fill to make the fluid all clear. Have you seen the diy on Lexls website? I was going to do the exact same thing. Drain and refill takes 2 quarts. After that, I was going to remove the hose that is going to the radiator then start the car. That will flush out all the dirty oil that is collected on the torque converter. While that is happening, I would be filling the tranny fluid on the dip stick till I see the fluid comes out crystal red. If you do it this way, it'll only be about 10 quarts since the whole capacity is a little over 8 quarts.
So is that bad too? I've done a drain and refill 2x when I first got the car. 1st time was about a week of owning it then the 2nd time was a month after. It looked no different in color as only 2 clean quarts was added and the 6 dirty quarts sitting in the torque converter just basically mixed with the 2 clean one i poured. This was a little over a 1.5 years maybe. I'm sure when I do a drain and refill again, it'll still be brown coming out there....
I'd have to look for the post on how many times you have to drain and refill to clean all the fluid out vs what I mentioned above. I'll try to find it and post the link here.

Here you go.. Post #10. It takes 10 drain and refill. Even with that, it is still not 100% clean but i'm sure you'll see the fluid a lot cleaner.

Also, there is a difference with flushing it the way dealers do it which I think is with a machine vs the DIY flush as PD mentioned

remember, theres a dif with a flush and a power-flush. power-flush is BAD (excess pressure possibly in the wrong direction is going to dislodge crap)
a flush, using the lines going to the trans cooling portion of the radtiator as input/output is my personal favorite. (search for method, basically you have the car on stands, in gear with the input to trans in fresh fluid and output into waste container, then run the motor in gear at low speed to push/pull the old fluid out and the new in.

Ease up on the kid, pinoiryder brought up a decent question. Not sure what the US-spec owners manual states but the Aussie service books and owner's manual specifically states that the ATF shouldn't be replaced unless operating in "Severe Conditions" (whatever that is), schedule A or B (can't remember off the top of my head). Basically it was saying unless you're stuck in a lot of stop-go traffic for extended periods not to change the ATF, and that was at 80k or something ridiculous intervals.
I usually do my tranny D&R about every 40k to 50k on my cars, the GS3 no different when it had its first service. My cars don't see too much of a thrashing, nor are stuck in extended delays in normal day-to-day driving, however I had it done just for some peace of mind.

A regular flush, exchanging all the fluid, is fine and good for the car. Drain and fill is less than half the total fluid you want to change. Very few places use a pressure flush, almost all are simple fluid exchangers. Don't listen to myths about flushes being bad for high mileage cars. This is one that just won't die!! Just did a flush on my 174k gs. Great improvement. Also did the filter even though by my own advice it didn't need it. I was right, filter was original and relatively clean. It would have outlasted the car.

I have a 2006 ES330, not a gs , and did the tranny fluid at 54K. See below for the old fluid is the middle, clear bottle. I use Amsoil 0w-30 for engine oil and MMO for fuel UCL.
I will say Toyota's lift-time never change is BS...It is way smoother using Amsoil ATF......And does not smell "off" after XX miles.
