Smile Intake for only $44.99? Makoto auto trends need opinions

So I stumbled across an intake system for my IS250 on eBay and its listed for $44.99 with $19.99 shipping from CA. Their actual site -- Makoto Auto Trends is legit. For some reason the same set up direct from their website is $149.99. It seems all the elements of an intake are there [even a K&N filter], but does anyone have this installed? Any takes on it?

So this is an open hot air intake? Something doesn't seem right there. What are all those brackets for? I'm guessing this isn't legal?

I just put a K&N intake system on my '06 IS350, and the tube isn't the same, neither are the brackets. This is someone else's intake, with a K&N filter on it. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Retail for K&N's kit is $300, and the cheapest you can find it on Ebay is $220. I got mine used for $90 (still a deal). With that said, I would be wary of the intake tube itself, as that is where the difference in HP comes from.....

Yeah I knew it felt a little funkadelic. I wouldn't trust it. Still wondering what those brackets mount to.

i would not install that on my car, and i dont think its being advertised as K&N intake. seems like its being sold as intake with K&N filter.

Plus it claims 8-15 horsepower. 15!!! F sport might be envious.

And what's the sensor for?

It's a cheap metal tube likely made in China for $5 then a cone filter on the end. Nothing magical there.

It's just as illegal in CA as every other intake made other than the F-sport.

And it's likely to produce anywhere from negative to +5 additional hp, just like all the other hot air intakes.

Now, compared to the other short rams it's a lot cheaper, and probably a lot more poorly made

If you want the max intake gains for the least price without going to a hot-air short ram get the Joe Z intake.

if you live in CA and are concerned about being CARB legal get the F-sport.

If you want a lot of noise and don't really care about legal or care about the gains or costs, get the short ram of your choice.

Someone stated there's no CAIs for the IS250 but I found a few online. What's the difference between a short ram and a CAI? I know where it draws the air from but mechanically what sets them apart?

No, you didn't. You found some people lying about what they are selling.

Where they draw the air from.

To make a real CAI on the 2IS you'd have to cut through some metal.

Still not following as to why makes a CAI vs short ram when it comes to the pipe or the cone filter or whatever. Is it just that there is nowhere under the hood that you can get to in order to draw cold air?
