Default K&N

I have a "drop-in" K&N filter and I modified a salvage yard '94 airbox to let more air in. The car feels stronger, is a bit faster 0-60 according to my stopwatch and sounds great as the motor winds out. Resetting the ECU got rid of the typical lag in acceleration too. I am looking into adapting a larger conical filter and some kind of cold air ducting now.

Is that Apexi just a bolt on filter replacement or is it a full intake? I'm trying to avoid intakes (for now) because Guru scares me...

Cool! The only air restriction I see is underneath the stock intake piping. It is where goes in the area which is udner the intake pipe and gets circulated around there. If you got rid of the stock pipe and did a straight intake pipe the air would go directly into the car, thus giving you more power.

Default RMM Intake

Any one here have any experience with a RMM intake?, it seems to be a nice set up ( i got a 98 GS400), however the Rod Millen site doesn't mention exactly what kind of cone filter its using? I've seen some pics of cars from CL using this intake setup, anyone got experience they'd like to share?

I got my car used, it came with a K&N filter 33-2137. It was FILTHY! I took it out and decided to get an OEM one.

I still have the K&N lying around....are you telling me that I can clean it up and reuse it?

I've been fortunate enough in my line of work to be able to actually do real tests with sensitive equipment on things as simple a filter and intake kits. While my test mule was a 4.6 DOHC engine, the air flow results would seem to ring true for our engines. A friend is a higher up at Rousch Racing. We plugged a laptop and other datalogging equipment into the car. With a drop in filter, the benefits were evident. The car slightly altered the ignition and fule curve, and the MAF was able to compensate for the additional flow (which is not alot..but it's there) and the car was happy. Now, when going to an intake system, the intake flowed so much more air, that the ECU was not able to compensate. The ECU tables weren't large enough to be able to alter the air/fuel mix to compensate for so much more air flow. (A word on the tables....the tables have high and low values as determined by air flow measurement of all the components. Thus, the tables say "These are the values for the highest possible air flow (plus a safe factor of 10% or so and the values for the possible lowest flow based on the STOCK components on the car. The car won't ever flow MORE than this, or less than THIS, so we will use these tables. This all changes when you to an intake. The tables weren't designed for somethign that flows so much better, like a different intake. This is the simplified version of what and why) The car was not happy, and lost power. With the laptop, we had to do pretty significant changes to the tables to get this "bolt-on" intake to work. After we did the changes, the intake definitely made quite a bit more power than the drop in, but like I said..we had to use specialized euipment to get those gains. I suspect the same thing would occur with a GS400 intake. Some tuning would almost definitely be required. Just trying to help...

What you are saying about the fuel air mixture tables and a new intake are true. That is why I got the SRT intake and the new fuel chip to reset the tables - it works awesome! The intake without the chip doesn't work, the mixture is too lean and the car goes into safe mode.
