GS diffs are NOT LSD's the Supra one is. Also, the gearing on the stock GS300 is 3.92 where as the Supra diff has 3.76 gearing...

Original poster wrote this:

"years 93-96 are the Worm Gear Type -the preferred units.
97 and up went with the Helical Gear rear end"

Main difference between the 2 types of gearsets. This is just in terms of general mechanics, not sure if it directly applies to the supra rear but it should.

To break it down to easy terms...
Helica Gear = More efficient, less friction, less noisy, less power handling ability.
Worm Gear = Less efficient, more friction, more noise, more power handling ability.

That should be correct...but if I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.

no im talking about the actual housing!
sorry if that wasnt clear in my post

im asking, does the gs300 use the same diff (as in housing size etc) as a supra
from this thread it would apear that supra diff gear is interchangeable... but i would just like to confirm!

jeff ... so u basically .. people take the more handling power of a 93-96 over a 97+ which is more effiecent and less noisey ? so there is no question the older version is better correct?

Yes the GS300 and supra use the same rear differential. Only difference is the companion flange. If you want to use the supra rear in the GS300, you will have to swap out companion flanges. Check out my writeup on this.

Goto the link that says "swapping out rear differential"

so without swapping the whole diff housing, i can buy say a kaaz lsd for a jza80 supra and then i can install it into the gs300 diff...keeping the stock crown wheel and pinion and housing and not even need to swap the champion ring

is this correct?

The 0-60 and 1/4 mile times listed in this thread just blows my mind! I can't believe that a TT 3.76 rear will only drop the 1/4 mile time by .2 and nothing on the 0-60 This really has me second guessing spending the money on this mod

Yeah, but remember one thing, .2 seconds in the 1/4 mile probably equates to 2-3 car legths in a race. Also, this LSD really shines when you start to put down more power...such as going FI. With more power you WILL have MAJOR traction issues without this LSD, then you will wish you had it...

The reason for that is because now the trans has to shift to 3rd gear to hit 60. Before with the 3.23 rear, the top of 2nd gear would get you to about 65-68mph or so@6200rpm. Yes, it does suck having to shift into 3rd to hit 60 lol. That's what us GS300 guys have always had to live with all this time

For my new setup, I'm going to rev to 7200rpm normally with a max of 7500rpm redline. That in junction with a 3.76TT LSD rear should get me to 67-70mph at the top of 2nd gear
