two types of lsd?
Supra TT Auto rear end w/LSD or the rmm or trd actual "changing of the gears ???" I know is 3:26 or something similar on those lines and the other is 3:77 one is going to cost 1400 bucks and other is 7-800 bucks. i would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of each, is it price that keeps people from the entire supra part, or is it not needed in overall performance compared to the trd or rmm...going to get one or the other thanks a bundle bryan

do a search
-Supra and RMM diff are the same unit, with 3.76 gear, whole differential with built-in LSD, I personally would go with the Supra unit myself.
-TRD is just the LSD, put this unit inside your stock diff, and stay with the factory gearing.

The factory Supra TT automatic assembly is just that, a complete limited slip housing already assembled. Cost is $1700+ but according to my TRD guy the Toyota inventory computer says it was discontinued last year and he would have to search to find a replacement. Caution, limited slip was an OPTION in 97-98 so an assembly MUST be confirmed as LSD. Labor to install is apx $300.
Differences... (besides the obvious gearing difference) the TRD unit uses an internal clutch pack to join both axles together so that power goes to both tires. In a turn the clutches "slip" allowing the car to make the turn smoothly. The stock Torsen type uses a very complex gear mechanism to allow cornering while powering both tires.
For road course driving and most street use the Torsen is VERY nice. For high power drag racing the TRD is actually more durable. Both are good choices. The Torsen is MUCH more expensive to repair/replace if damaged (unlikely on our cars).

Installing it is not THAT bad. I'd say around $300 labor to do it. As for toughness level, the TRD unit is a good solid clutch type but if you road race or want something a little smoother and quieter, there is the new ATS carbon fiber LSD which is the nicest LSD out there. I'm getting one soon as this open dif is driving me crazy.

Guru,
Did some searching about and found the ATS Carbon LSD for about $1250. Looks pretty nice but it's a bit expensive considering it's just the internals like the TRD. Like the TRD you would be stuck with the stock gearing, but apparently it's not a big deal to swap the gears out, at additional cost of course.
Do you have a good source lined up? Can you get it for cheaper? Thanks.

If you mention ClubLexus I give you free shipping. I am placing an order for my own so perhaps if we buy both together we can get a good deal. I'll see what I can do for you. E-mail me privately about it. They actually came down in price a lot this month. They are on promotion right now. Normally they are $1750.

Heh heh heh heh
Guru, Looks like we have already been exchanging emails. I did a google search on "ATS Carbon LSD" and came across the godspeed site. I sent a few emails yesterday asking about fitment for a GS400. I'll follow up with you.
