Default Trans Fluid Change

Good morning guys. I checked out the maintence shcedule in manual looking for the correct mileage to change the tranny fluid. I may have missed it, but I didn't see any specific mileage that Lexus requires a fluid change.

I'm used to changing tranny fluid every 15K in my previous vehicles and I will probably continue doing the same now. My question, is there a factory recommended mileage that you should change the tranny fluid on a 98-03 GS 300? Thanks in advance.

I think you'll find that, unless your car is used in "Special Operating Conditions", Lexus doesn't give you a change interval for the tranny or power steering fluids. However, there are several schedules that have been developed by CL members that include these changes. I just did mine as part of the 60k service. For the tranny, 30k seems like a reasonable interval to me. I think I'll do the PS every 15k.

Thanks George. I did a search, but didn't find anything definitive on what the factory recommends. I think that you're correct about the special operating conditions. That's the only place I found a recomendation.

You will hear from some that 30k is too often for the tranny but I think it's cheap insurance. My last one with T-IV ATF fluid from Champion Toyota (Houston) and using a Toyota moonlighter mechanic cost me less than $100. Be careful though, a Lexus dealer may charge you far more than this.

The Lexus service here recommended to replace the AT fluid every 24 months or 30,000 miles.

It says on the transmission dip stick and in the owners manual, the fluid never needs changing. However, feel free to give Lexus, or someone, as much money as you want, for service you don't need.
Having said that, I had a complete fluid change (not what they normally do at Lexus) at about 30,000 and won't again.
Same with the coolant. They will be happy to do it much more often than necessary

Correction: The Lexus service here recommended to pay unnecessary funds to them every 24 months or 30,000 miles.

Be aware that while there MAY be a reduction in wear there is probably greater risk that dirt will be introduced, the wrong level my be set, the wrong fluid may be used, the drain plug may be left loose or stripped.

Reliability is not just a one way calculation. You can easily make things less reliable by unwarranted tinkering.

Perhaps the dealer can explain how they know better than Lexus Toyota.

tell
you the truth guys my car has 50k one previous owner lady driven hwy miles here in so florida i checked the fliud last week and was staring to take on brownish color not burnt smell but had my dealer do a complete flush and refill took 20 quarts to get my fliud internally back to complete sweet red (these are my hommies at this dealership so they dont charge me for extras like the extra 10 quarts to run through)

now my tranny really feels silky smooth (do the drain and refill if fluid is reddish color otherwise do the powerflush tp preserve the integrity of powertrain warr

Only to share my thought... If the trany fluid still has the reddish color, then it is still good for another 10K or 20K miles. Otherwise if the fluid changes its color to brownish and smell burn after long drive, then it is time to change it.
