Default rear differential

i was at dealer yesterday and they reccommended changing fluid in rear differential. i've got a 99 gs 400 with 49,000 miles that i bought 3 months ago. they did a vehicle service history and apparently that was never done. anyway they wanted $85 to do it and they said it should be done every 15,000 miles along with all the other fluids i.e. coolant, brake fluid and oil every 5,000. any comments does rear end fluid really need changed , also is this a fair price. any comments

Yes, with 50k miles you should change the diff. fluid. $85 from dealer is about right.

Welcome to the Lexus high maintanence program. the dealer will try to get you to spend lots of money. Read the owners manual and follow their program.
The differential and transmission and brake fluids are three items that the dealer wants to do more often than Toyota thinks necessary.
I'd have this done now, and then never again.
Same with the transmission, have a complete fluid change and never again.
The brake fluid can go the same way, except I'd not do it yet.
And the coolant. My local dealer installs a flush kit, hooks up to a very good filter, adds some chemicals, and charges over $120. Not my way.

Unless you like the coffee there.
Just my opinion,
Neil

Default fluid change

thanks for feedback. i had the tranny fluid changed right after i bought car, it was a dirty dark brown color. the acura dealer where i bought car installed new brake rotors would 'nt they have changed the brake fluid, at the same time, also would they do new pads then to. how can you tell when you need new brake fluid, also when would you do coolant? dealer wanted $85 for brake fluid and $65 for coolant also $35 for air filter, i said no thanks to all of it and just got oil changed still cost $62. thanks ivan
