i tried making my home-made ac filter....
took out the old one,
went to homedepot for a house ac filter
cut it and installed it
checked how it ran after a couple days..
My comments are this:
the original ac filter seems to have a carbon medium in between two white filters..
does anyone know if thats the carbon filtration that the car has or is it somewhere else.
Anyways, off the top i could tell that the oem filter has a lot more filtration than any
homedepot one i could find. im still trying to find a place where i can get a similar
filter to the oem one. homedepot has the paper looking ones, the oem has like a carbon
in between the sheets im sure theres a lengthy significance..
i could tell the freshness of the air once i installed it
but after a couple days of use i checed how it was, man,
both sides of the filter were brownish, and i suddenly felt the quality of
what i had made... i am in serious doubt of the homedept filters being the replacement
for the oem,..
anyone got any help suggestions similar experiences or comments.. thanks

I got a replacement ac filters from the dealer for both my GS and the RX (at different times and dealers). They both have the white fuzzy plastic filter media, that looks washable. It doesn't look like a double or sandwiched carbon filter. My old ones liked like that because that were really dirty.
Maybe getting the Filtrate 1250 (goes for around $15) will do the trick. You also have to watch out for the end piece of your filter. Its corrugated, and air may slip past it if its not sealed. Just my 2 cents.

I've double layered the 3m filter. Problem being that chicken wire type material they use to hold in place. It's a little tough to get 100% coverage and a good fit.
That being said, after many months of use, looking at the filter, it definately did it's job.
I installed a new A/C filter a few months ago with a major 60K service, and maybe it's mental, but the air did seem a *little bit* better. This is in good contrast to say ... a civic .. . which I had to drive around the past week before selling it for a friend, which has no air filter for the cabin and spits out whatever little pollen and leaf particle that happens to be near the air intake at you.
Happy to be back in my lexus. Sure, you can do the multi layer 3-m, or even single layer it like I did one other time. But there's something to be said about the extra "fit and finish" of the OEM or replacement part.
my 2 cents.

I checked our local parts store and they carry either carbon filter OEM replacements for about $45 or sometype of another for $17. I had them order the $17 one, we will see if this helps the "moldy" smell that I seem to be having.

It was confusing though... here are the exact numbers.
Purolator C35426 for $17
Fram CF8638 for $45 (OEM Replacement)
Fram CF8769 for $35
I wonder if the cost for the CF (carbon fiber I assume) is worth the cost??

I dont know about ghetto rigging something but I changed my A/C filter and it's a noticeable difference...The OEM is the best way to go especially if youre spending the $30-$45 price range...Just talk to Steve at Carson Toyota!!!...He'll get you the hook up!!!
Just my thoughts!!!

So do you think the OEM is really worth the cost? I am a tight A@@ sometimes, expecially since I purchased a few K&N's at the same time.
