Default Buying my first Lexus

Purchasing ‘98 gs400 with 212k miles only spending a grand. I’m not a big cue freak or anywhere close, I do enjoy looking hearing and driving fast and awesome looking cars. With that being said, I was wondering where I should start with any types of upgrades. Money is hard to come by for some people y’all just keep that in mind haha. I’m also not a big time mechanic or anything, but luckily my brother in law knows quite a lot when it comes to cars he owns a Lexus is350 so he can definitely help with the leg work haha.

These cars are cool and we all love ours, but they aren't fast cars by any means, and to make one fast takes a grip of money. Might not be a good idea for you to try and modify it towards power and performance if money's right. You'd be better off making it look cool with rims, slammed, and interior/ exterior work. Just my thoughts.

I’m with TrueGS300.
If you got it for a grand, assume your gonna need at least a grand just to take care of basic maintenance if that’s an unknown.

Fast and Lexus and budget never line up - lol

Reading.
Read build threads. Read troubleshooting threads. Read manuals. Read DIYs. Read everything, but start with the FAQ of this forum. And if you can find yourself a factory service manual, it'll be the best few hundred bucks or illegal download you ever spend on your car. It documents literally every system of the car, how to diagnose it, how it comes apart, and how it goes back together. Can't beat it.

well the needed repairs weren’t unknown but due to its age it seems there were a few surprises that I found yesterday, the suspension in the driver side seemed to have given out and I believe the starter just died. But I did know we had to fix the valve cover gaskets and there is a leak in the exhaust. I bought the car from my brother in law who had it for about 4 years and rarely drove it or did anything to it(mainly bc he was working on his is300 first then gonna do the gs) he sold it to me bc he really wanted a drift car.
