Default Tenebrism. Got skills? Challenge!

So, I want this effect:

On the attached pic below.

Can you play with it?

I want to give the image as a gift (will print on canvas), with mostly the face and shoulder exposed to the light. Background is insignificant, so blacked-out is fine. I think it should simply need some play with lighting and contrast, but I'm not good at that.

Phil, I don't think the quality of this image would lend itself well to the post-processing effect you're trying to achieve. It isn't partituculary a high res photo and the light source (whatever it is) seems to cause an over exposure to her face which blows out a lot of detail.

The two images you provided as examples appear to be resized from a higher res photo where the light source was strategically placed to get that effect. Doing something like that in PS with a normal photo, I think would be rather difficult. I don't know, I've never attempted doing something of that nature before. Wish I could be of more help.

I didn't get a chance to copy the photo you want shopped, now its gone.
If you put it back up, I have a couple ideas that might work.

Thanks for the input guys.

Yeah, the pic is overexposed, but I thought that if darkened, it may not need so much detail.

By the way, I'm probably gonna get the image made onto an oil on canvas, so it will surely lose further detail.

Ok, so I tried a few different things and really wasn't very successful. Getting over the flaws that Seize pointed
out was just too difficult to get any kind of decent result without making what looks to be a cartoon.

For example:

So I figured since you were planning on making this a painting then I would try to cough something up that would still sort of be in the style you were looking for but would lend itself more to being a painting.

If that is something close to acceptable I can modify it as you direct....

That looks good!

I think I can play with that.

Found an online photo app called FotoSketcher, that can make oil painting effects.

I will probably order an oil on canvas to look like this:

yeah, a picture like that really needs to be taken with soft light on side of face reflecting not added in post.
