MY RC in the body shop in Arizona
Hey peeps,
Just want to post on here to steer clear of ANY Gerber Collision and Glass location in Arizona. Here is the scoop in condensed form.
I dropped off my Lexus at the Gerber Collision located in Avondale, AZ back on 12/14/15 to repair sandstorm damage to the paint.
After 38 days, Gerber Collision could not properly paint my car. When I looked at the car the last day it was at Gerber, the car was two toned. Basically they screwed it up.
Had my Lexus transferred to Penske Automotive Collision Center in Scottsdale, AZ on 1/27/16. That is where my Lexus has been since. Penske measured the paint thickness and discovered a thickness of 26 mills. Lexus spec paint thickness is 6 mills. Penske had to rework all the paint and strip my car down to the metal. The hood, both front quarter panels, both door outside panels and the trunk lid had to be scrapped. The paint was so thick that when they tried to remove it, the metal warped. So they ordered new panels.
Here is what my car looked like when I first purchased it back in January 2015.
Here is what the Lexus currently looks like while it's at Penske.
Stay away from Gerber Collision and Glass.

Holy $h*t Batman. Thanks for the heads up. Are you sure about the 26mm? Shouldn't that have read 2.6mm?
FWIW, I had my Acura TL years ago, which was rear- ended, repaired at that Penske body shop (on McKellips?), and they did an excellent job.

I am not absolutely sure on whether it's 26 or 2.6. Either way, it was way above the spec thickness. I could actually see the paint variations with my naked eye. They also over-sprayed my wheels and the roof along the roof-line.
I'm trying to stay optimistic about Penske since I saw two Ferrari's one being a La Ferrari, a Rolls Royce and about six BMW 7 series sedans in the Penske shop being worked on.
The biggest challenge by far is the special paint used on the Lexus. The Infra-Red color is a beast to achieve.

Infrared, a $600 option, is produced by a multi-layer unusual paint process, and repainting any part of it is not something I would entrust to a conventional body shop.

That really sucks. Hope they can get it back to spec, but how bad was the original damage from the sandstorm. And is Penske a Lexus Certified Body Collision center? Really interested in seeing the results, especially with the infrared paint.

Sorry to hear about that.. Sucks to have to get a brand new car repainted...

The damage was very extensive and very noticeable. The paint on the entire front end look like it was hit with a ton of birdshot from a shotgun.
