Car Not Running, high pitched whine from rear end
This is weird-I tried to search the Forum for any previous posts but couldn't find anything
Car was in the garage. Had been off for hours. Husband noticed a high pitched whine coming from the rear of the car. Louder underneath. I opened the trunk and took out everything in the cargo net (thought something had gotten stuck in it, a gadget of some kind). Nothing there. I went to unhook the net and pull up the mat etc. and the noise stopped (coincidence I'm sure).
I couldn't find anything. It didn't sound like it was coming from the wing at all (had trouble with wing being stuck down when I first got it).
Any thoughts? Poltergeist?

Probably the dreaded fuel pump issue. It's inside the fuel tank, located where you're hearing the noise. Call your dealer and get it towed (on a flat-bed, of course), to avoid getting stranded somewhere. They seem to be crapping out at 4 to 6K miles. Good luck.

I would have to agree with the potential for a failed fuel pump; however I would disagree with the "dreaded" comment as its still not a common failure. Also the fact that the car had been off for hours leads me to believe this was not due to said fuel pump, but most likely associated with the sound system or another electronic device
Did the emitted sound seem mechanical, e.g. a whirring motor?

From the manual...
Image won't load - But check Page 8 in manual.
"Approximately five hours after engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction."

OP, if that's what happened, should have titled your thread better (How about: "Brief high pitched whine with engine off"?). Anyway, wasn't the only one who misinterpreted it. But hope it was just the evap system. Please confirm your car actually runs.

Agree with JC, the title is a little misleading. I think a lot of us are "spooked" about the fuel pump failing and righteously so. I actually use to listen out for it, but since I've clocked a little over 10K I've kinda stopped worrying about it so much.

My GX does the same thing. I was a little worried after the first time it happened but my service advisor, who BTW is exceptional, assured me it was a normal operation.

Good to know about the fuel pump issues some have had
Thanks for all of your input!
