I don't know what I did but mine comes on red soon as I start my car up without pressing the switch. I guess I got lucky.

As a 52 y.o. inflexible guy trying to get that connector apart, I taught myself some new curse words. Thanks to Corrado for showing the small tab that must be depressed to unsecure the connector. Once you get your finger on that tab and press down, the connector slides off easily. The rest of the install is plugging in a couple of connectors, deciding how to tuck wires and deciding where you want the switch located.

I have mine set by default to Red . It's programmed in the "On" position while pressing on the mode (see instructions that came with it).

The hardest part of the job for me was deciding where to route the wiring and put the controller box. I ended up tucking the controller box behind the carpet just behind the e-brake pedal. There is a fairly big space in there and the controller box drops right in. The other thing was I hate seeing any wiring etc. hanging down from under the dash so I probably went a little overboard with a few zip ties, also trying to make sure the wiring would not get caught up in the brake pedal action.

The instructions for the controller are a little obscure, but if you stare at them long enough you figure out that you can set it to start in the same mode as when the car shut down, or you can set it to start in normal mode.

I'm still getting used to it but this is much more like having a mechanical throttle, which is what I was looking for.

Just finished installing the Apexi Smart Accel Controller and it took over 15 minutes just to remove the connector from the accelerator (very tight squeeze) the rest of the install was done in about 5 minutes.
After being able to remove the connector the first time which took a long time, and trying to remove it the 2nd time as a test, it was super easy.

Set to "Red" at default as well.

There's enough room to hide the controller box just under where the switch is mounted along with the other buttons.

Thanks to Mod in Japan -Lou for quick response to provide quote and getting it shipped.

you can set it up to either turn on automatically when you start the car, push the button to turn it on.

my understanding is that you should not turn it on while driving. Does this mean you have to be in P or just completely stopped with the car in D?

and is it ok to switch modes while moving?

Absolutely, you can turn it on at anytime, it doesn't matter. But if you're driving around 30-40mph & you hit it when it's on Red the car is going to jump a lil' just like it got a Boost of Energy Now if you hit it when you're below say 10-20mph i've never noticed a difference. Also, when you're going around 50-60mph it will give you a Boost of Energy IF it's in the Red Mode! Just my Experience

How are you guys setting it up to come on automatically? After 9 months of pressing it everyday I think I'm ready to take the time to figure it out lol

To be very honest with you, I don't know what I did but It's on red soon as I start my car up.

Put it on the desired mode, turn off car, hold down "...", turn car on (don't start). It should blink 3 times. Turn off car and it should come on automatically next time you start.

Mine is set up to come on which ever mode it was in went i turned it off (always red). But, i have to turn it on when i start the car, not sure i would want it on at all times just because it's so jumpy. If you're at a red lite & not paying attention, talking or whatever & you're drinking tea, coffee, etc... i have made that mistake with the tea & when the lite turned green, i had tea all over me. It's VERY jumpy when leaving from a dead stop (in red mode). Just sayin' it's not a good idea to be drinking something when the lite turns green

I hear you. For just this reason, I engage it manually when needed, then only pressing "up" for purple, then "down" to red as necessary. It's extremely responsive!
