Some of them were running 13s and trapping at 100 mph. With so many options available, I simply grew out of the car, which is why I stopped modding it, but I never wanted to part ways with it because of the 2ZZ. It still seems to be very popular in PR.
PR will mod a lot of things. 2ZZ never caught on here in the USA. After people grenading motors in their Celica GT-S and Corolla XRS...people dropped them real quick and moved onto better platforms.

Dude, those grenading motors were because people were misshifting at redline spiking the engine rpm to 10,000 rpm causing valve float. It had nothing to do with the engine design. I have one that was driven hard and has seen the 8000+ rpm redline thousands of times over the last 16 years and has 230,000 original KM on it and it drives incredibly well.

The early C60 transmissions had the 5th/6th placed close to 4th/3rd so people would downshift into 3rd from 4th accidentally instead of going to 5th at redline. Toyota revised the gate and the 5th and 6th were placed farther out in later 2003+ 2ZZ models. Misshifts happened in Honda world all the time. It is driver error. Lotus continued to use 2ZZ for many years after Toyota retired it in 2006.

I agree, grenading engines in that regard are by overrev. I like the 2ZZ and I think its a great engine. I get some folks don't like it, or have conspiracies of the reliability, but generally if you don't gear jam or try shifting fast when you have literally never driven a manual before, you should be a-ok.

Lotus continued to use the 2ZZ for many years in the Exige yes...but how many did they actually sell? Not many. 2ZZ-GE is my least favorite Toyota/Yamaha engine collab. Never really considered them when they were in the market....both Celica GT-S or the Corolla XRS. I went for the IS 300 brand new instead.

I absolutely love the 2jz (I mean, who would not?) but, on terms of power and weight and such things I'd say the 2zz was more like best in class for its engine size. Stock 2JZ GE's were capable of around 225 hp at the crank, 2ZZ at upwards of 180ish at the crank. That's missing two cylinders and 1.2 liters of displacement!

I was never a fan of the 2ZZ when it debuted in the 7th Gen Celica...simply because it had no torque. Having a high revving engine and going no where was not my idea of driving fun. I had a 99 Solara SE V6 5-speed manual through college and was about to put a TRD S/C on it. I finally woke up and realized how having more torque steer and driving a front heavy FWD car on twisty roads was not fun. This was with 18" wheels, low profile tires, TRD sways, eibach springs and tokico shocks. When I had my first job out of college, I saved up and finally had the money to afford my brand new 2004 IS 300. I haven't owned a Toyota since I sold my Solara in 2006 which I sold through here. I'm on my 9th Lexus and on my 3rd 1st Gen IS 300.

If you did not like high-revving 4 cylinder engines, that is your own choice. Like many others, I enjoyed the hell out of it even if it meant revving the hell out of the engine to get anywhere quick. It was rewarding for us and surprised a lot of people. I It was very light, small, quick and a lot of fun to toss around. However, it was meant for a different target market.

I like high revving 4 cylinders, just not the 2ZZ.

I believe it is one of the best 4-cylinder engines Toyota ever made and I say it with 16+ years of experience of owning it. We can agree to disagree there.

I looked up the specs on the engines you listed and they don’t have a lot of torque either. Have you driven a 2zz? Aside from the F20 on an S2000 it’s a fun engine to wind up.
