RX300 vs 4Runner
Not sure what to get... 99 RX300 or 99 4Runner Limited. I don't do any major off roading, but I am active and like the truck utility. RX is much more luxury and better driving performance on the pavement, but I've always loved the 4R. Between the two, we're talking about +$3k more for an comparable RX.
What would you do?

4Runner all the way buddy.
I own a 2000 Limited 4wd.
In my opionion the 4runner blows the rx away by looks.
If your hauling stuff around the rx will have slightly more power but lessing hauling abilities....like suspension and ruggedness.
I LOVE my 4runner!!
I have plenty of pics....
Im sadly a 4runner freak/expert so get back to me if you any question...

The 4Runner is a nice vehicle and would win my vote if you need a more truck-like vehicle for hauling, towing and off-roading. But if you don't do these things there is no way the Toyota can compete in the areas of interior appointments, ride, dealership experience and overall luxury onwership experience. If the RX provides enough utility to meet your needs, I would go with the Lexus and not look back.

I recently traded in my 99 Toyota 4runner Limited for the 2004 RX330.
The 99 4Runner was a good looking truck. The handling and ride were just OK, but heck it's a truck. It was also very reliable and solid as a rock.
HOWEVER the Gas mileage on this truck was so poor it started to get at me. The combination of the small gas tank and poor fuel economy was making me see the gas needle go lower as I just drove around my neighborhood. I am NO environmentalist looking for the best gas mileage, but heck give me a truck that guzzles gas and has a decent size gas tank to last me a week of commuting and I'm all for it. The 4runner had me at the gas station filling up often.
The RX300 is the way to go for luxury and the car like ride. However if you want a more manyly, rugged vehicle, go with the 4runner. The new generation 4runners are looking very nice also and have a host of improvements and changes.

The RX has an excellent 4WD system (traction control that shifts power to the wheels that need it), much better then the 4runner.
The 4runner rides excellent but not as nice as the RX.
The 4runner has much more cargo room than the RX.
RX has more power.
The 4runner handles and steering control is nicer in my opinion. RX's steering has driveline feedback
RX has nicer seats, especially the rear seats which recline.
The RX has VSC, I don't believe the 4runner does.
My vote? The 4runner because I need the cargo space otherwise it would be the RX.

My 2 cents for what its worth. I had a 99 Rx for 100K miles. I have alot of experience with 4runners, actually just bought an 04. If you could spend the extra cash, I would get an 00 Rx instead of a 99. My wife drove the 99, we got an 01 which will be 3 years old this month, she has 97k miles on it now. The difference between the 99 and 01 are unbeliavable. try to move up a year get the 4runner. Just my thoughts.

I just tried it out and sure enough it does recline The think I found out was that you do not need to pull the lever under the seat. Mine reclines simply by lifting the latch at the top of the seat and pushing the seat backwards.

For this particular issue, a 99RX vs 99 4Runner, I'd say get the RX... When I was buying the Acura, I looked at the 4Runner (based on price range brand new) I liked my RX better...

Actually, I did not know either until I looked in the RX300 manual and after backseat passengers asked the same question. It does not recline much but enough to be like a LAZY CHAIR.

Thanks for the responses. I'm leaning strongly towards the 4Runner, the RX hasn't won me over... I dunno what it is, but I'm just not feel'n it like the 4R. But now I've added another contender... Land Cruiser/LX 470 . I'm gonna go test drive a '99 4R and '99 LC at the dealership tonight and kind of get a feel which direction I want to go. As long as I stay in the Toyota family, it's all good.
I'll keep you posted...

Drove the 4Runner and Land Cruiser tonight... no competition... 4Runner hands down! The LC was too cushy of a ride, too much body lean, and the seats were not as supportive. I was impressed by its engine though, and tons of space - a very wide SUV. So I guess I'll end up with a 4Runner when I find the right one.
