Another RX300 Question (Miles to Empty)
#5
Unfortunately, the RX300 only shows the number of miles driven after fueling up. Kinda useless. I do like the MPG display. I can catch stations that cheat on octane. (Octane 85 gives me 15-16 MPG vs. the normal 21-23.)
I have a '02 RX300 with Navigation. It does *not* give miles to empty (I checked and re-checked.) I do realize that once the fuel warning light goes on, I still have about 4.5 gallons left. Good for another 80-90 miles on the highway. The warning is very conservative, but useful out in the Wild Wild West where gas stations could be very far apart.
I do wonder if the fuel warning light blinks when it gets really low on gas???

I have gotten to that point, when it was out of gas. I was in the middle of Mexico (Hidalgo state for people who know Mexico). Car sputtered as I had been looking for a gas station everywhere. Luckily, saw a Pemex up ahead. No flashing light. I only must have gotten about 40-50 extra miles once the gas light came on, but then again I was in the mountains.

Hi Lexmexico,
What year model is your RX? The older model has a small tank (17.2 gallon.) My 2002 has a 19.8g tank so I suppose it has a larger reserve. Twice I filled up as soon as the warning light came on. Both time I was able to put in exactly 15.3 gallons. So I do the math and figure I have 4.5 gallons in reserve.

Harrier,
I have a 99 AWD.
I knew about that difference when I bought it. However, since living south of the border, it is amazing how few gas stations they have despite being a big oil exporter. Though they are improving.

Good question, since lead can fry your catalytic converter.
There used to be a gas called Nova (can mean new or no go depending on its meaning) that was leaded. The last time it existed in Mexico was about late 98-early 99.
BIG WARNING TO ALL PEOPLE TAKING THEIR LEXUS SOUTH OF THE BORDER.
DO NOT USE MAGNA GAS (THE CHEAPER STUFF).
This stuff is loaded with as much as 440 ppm of sulfur. While not instantly harmful to your catalytic converter. This can screw the new Tier-II catalytic converters. Not sure if Lexus has them installed, but they will.
The PREMIUM gas is just fine for your car. It was reformulated recently and is about 200-220 ppm, which is the max you might find in the states.
Also, fill up in the states if you are just taking a day trip across. Gas costs about $2.40 a gallon for Magna and $2.80 a gallon for Premium at Pemex.
Magna is 87 octane and Premium is 93.
