Default just bought brake caliper stickers..a few questions

just got some brake caliper stickers (black) at www.is300.net and plan to paint the calipers red before putting the stickers on. if any have done this, do I need to take the entire brake off before painting or can I just remove the wheel and paint from there, being sure to tape off the surrounding areas. also, are there any recommended paint brands i should use? thanks in advance and I'll be sure to show the pics when done

"G2" makes a special paint designed for painting brake calipers. An internet search should provide you
with several sources. It is brushed on and easy to apply, but I would recommend removing the pads &
shims prior to painting. The catch is you need access to all four rotors before starting as the paint is
mixed with catalist prior to application. It retails for about $40.

You've got LOTS of good info on our forum on options for painting your calipers. It's not RX specific, but it should be pretty much the same for products and process. I've got G2 on my GS and love it, but it's pricey. Duplicolor is now selling a set in most chain auto stores for 1/2 the price of the G2.

One of our CL members posted a great writeup on another forum (SELOC)

I also used G2 and am happy with the results. Are you really sure you want red??

Just in case Tammy wasn't clear enough, this typically means 4 jack stands and a floor jack (since the jack stands rest where the tire jack points are). I didn't remove anything, but did use masking tape. It depends on how exacting you want to be.

If you look in the archives, you'll see that some people have taken everything apart and/or spray painted. The G2 looks really good to me.

Here in Mexico, I had my calipers on my RX painted black. My mechanic used a DuPont paint that nearly every other person I talked to said was excellent for this purpose. I cannot remember which type of paint, but will ask my mechanic when I get the chance. The paint has held up with no problems whatsoever for 2 years.

thanks you guys for such quick responses!!!

i like the red cuz they look nice on black porsches that ive seen. also, i contacted is300.net and changed my caliper stickers to silver instead of black. i think silver lettering on red calipers make a nice contrasting color.

Not on Rx but on GS, I used hi-temp red paint, then applied the sticker and then covered it all up with a clear hi-temp enamel. The clear enamel darken the paint by a small amount.

Before you go through the trouble, check what is visible through the slots in the rim.
Clean the surface well with a wire brush and wash off with the brake cleaner.
Make sure paint does not come on the parts that move (pads where they touch the caliper, spring-clips).
Spray on thin coats.
Tape/cover all areas to avoid over-spray.
The only thing I took off was the wheel(s) on GS, and I am sure the same applies for RX.

Last off all, brake fluid and paints do not mix ... [Brake fluid will eat up the paint]. Once on, brake servicing needs to be done with care.

after careful thought and consideration, as well as advice from you guys, friends, and coworkers, i decided not to go with the red paint and have opted for the glossy black paint with silver lettering. i think that will go well with my black exterior, plus in the event (of course i will do my best to prevent this) of overspray, at least its black and not very noticeable red. i went to checkers and they didnt have any type of brake caliper paint. so i then went to autozone, and they had this spray can for $7.99 that was specifically for brake caliper painting. i didnt buy it yet because i want to check with you guys...would u use this? or should i go with the G2 that retails $40 i believe. also its a matter of convenience as i dont have to order the can, since its right at autozone. what do you guys think? thanks again for all the good advice which i will print out before i do this. im not as mechanically inclined as some of you!

i did the G2 search and will go with the G2 since i like the fact that it is brush on, so that means no overspray. what color would you guys do on a black RX? black or red calipers? ( i have already ordered the silver lexus lettering).

Black. Red only belongs on Brembo and some OEM Porsche IMO.
