Question Dad is considering moving to an RX... any advice?

My dad is considering moving from a Toyota Tundra double cab to an Rx300. His main reasoning for getting out of the Tundra, which he bought not more than 3 months ago, is the gas consumption. he currently gets about 17MPG in the monster truck and is looking for a little more considering he drives 45 miles each way to work. So, whats your guys take on the RX? do you love it, hate it. Complaints? What should he look for in getting a CPO RX? Oh and the one hes looking at is aslo AWD. One of his gripes with ANY car is having to take it back for some sort of service. He HATES that. I currently have a 99 GS4 and have never been to the dealer for anything other than routine stuff. Im pretty sure an RX would be the same, but any advice you can give on things to look out for would be much appreciated!

I think you will find most of us here love our RX or at least don't regret our investment in it. However, I don't think the gas mileage difference is enough to make it worth the trade. My 2001 AWD gets 19.7 in all around driving, which I think is about average. There have been many discussions about gas mileage here. Do a search if you wish to view them. With not that great a difference in gas mileage, your dad really needs to decide which vehicle fits his needs.

I agree, he wont get much more than that in the RX!! Never see 20 in the city for sure--at least I dont even come close.

Keep the Tundra Double cab---thats a very nice ride. (Does he have the V-8?) That makes it even more sweeter

The MPG is going to depend on how much of that 45 miles is highway.

I used to make a 55 mile commute (each way!)... 8 miles of that was city driving, and 47 was highway, timed to avoid rush-hour stop-and-go. With that mix, I got about 21 MPG with my RX 300 and 23 MPG with my RX 330 - both AWD.

Now I'm making a MUCH better 4 mile commute, all city driving. MPG dropped like a rock - now it's about 17.

I think thats my problem as well! One way to work now is only 8 miles so its killing the gas mileage--Im about with you 17. I have not been on a road trip yet with it, I will be pleased to see 23-25MPG.

The RX330 is rated 18/24 by EPA. 19 mpg average by auto magazines. I don't think it's enough to justify a trade in.

If your dad wants great highway mileage, AWD, and top-notch reliability, get a Toyota Matrix or a Subaru.

I LOVE my RX. I love the ride height, the cargo capability, the smooooooth ride. I truly want a convertible w/ a manual tranny, but I love this SUV too much to switch. I get excellent MPG also (better than my Prelude SH or IS300 got!)
