Default Tranny Failure - Need Advice

Guys,

I have a 2000 RX300 FWD with 73K miles. Recently it got a transmission failure (gears do not switch properly) and my local Lexus dealer says that the tranny is out of warranty (73K miles). They also said that I should try pressing Lexus to change it under warranty since it is only 3K miles over.

Has anybody had a similar experience/issue with Lexus and what are the chances of success?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had mine replaced at 67,000 under warranty. Mine never failed--only made a humming noise. It was probably in the process of "going". They diagnosed the problem and ordered a new one. They were very nice about it. If you are a good customer it is worth a try. They know there are issues.

The service manager, if he's worth his salt, should be pushing Lexus corporate FOR YOU to get this done under warranty. If he/she doesn't then I'd go to another dealer. Calling corporate directly is also a good idea. Do a search on transmission failure in this forum and you'll have plenty of amunition to go at them with because it's a common problem that they are aware of. Lucky for me my RX300 tranny runs fine so far. Good luck.

I know this doesn't help you, but we traded our RX300 in today with about 68K miles. I was very concerned about the transmission issues and my wife started saying "it just wasn't right" with something every now and then. So, we got an 05 RX330. Peace of mind, I guess.

Thank you guys. I'll try to make them replace it under warranty.

The service manager has no incentive to do that. Lexus doesn't pay as much as what dealers usually bill the customer for the same type of work.

I know there's no extra financial incentive for the SM to push for warranty on these types of situations. The incentive is from a customer service standpoint which is supposed to be a big reason wny we buy Lexus in the first place. Isn't it?There's no way, shape or form a transmission should fail so many times in a SUV that cost almost $40k new. Do a search here in the RX forum and see how many people have this problem. There's also several times that Lexus has fixed it under warranty even past the mileage period. There's the precedent for this guy to het his fixed as well. I'd be printing out the many pages on this forum about tranny failure on the RX's and have it in hand when you call. Anyway......

Any maintenance records that the dealer or Lexus have on record for fluig changes? If not they have a case to deny the 'goodwill' gesture.
