A few months ago I bought a 2000 RX300 from a Lexus dealer here in N. California. Yesterday my wife got pulled over and got a ticket for window tinting!! Apparently the Ca. vehicle code says that window tinting on the front side windows is illegal unless the material meets a minimum light transmittance level, meets a Federal motor vehicle safety standard and is designed to block ultraviolet rays. And furthermore to avoid a ticket the driver is supposed to have a certificate stating that the tint meets these standards.
The front side tinting on my RX300 is very light and does not look like anything out of the ordinary , for what that's worth. My vehicle's history shows it came off lease in Arizona so while I have no evidence that this is not some kind of aftermarket tint, I have to assume it is a factory tint.
Assuming it is a Lexus factory tint, does anyone have experience/guidance on how to handle? Is it possible to get a certificate from Lexus that shows that the tint is legal in Ca?
I know the other option is to argue with the dealer and try to get them to remove the tint, but I expect that will be expensive unless the dealer is willing to pay for the work (which seems unlikely in my opinion)
Thanks for any input

Guess the local donut shop was closed yesterday.
The front window tint is only in the glass. There's no factory tint film. So whatever you got must be aftermarket film. You can ask the dealer to remove it, since they sold you the RX.
Or if you know your doctor very well, you can claim some medical condition that require tinting. Then tint it pitch black and **** off the CHPs.

Up in Virginia, these maximum tint laws apply to back windows too. A former boss of mine got ticketed, driving an SUV that had previously come from Texas. As I understand it, the rationale is that law-enforcement personnel can't see if someone inside is pointing a gun at them through heavily tinted windows.

I could've sworn that my cousin in LA said that front windows can't be tinted at all. AZ laws are way different; when I was living there, the fronts could be 20% and backs could be as dark as you'd like.

Accoding to this list that someone posted, CA allows 70% on the front sides, and any % on the rear sides and rear.

In CO, you can tint the front really dark. The cops don't give it a hoot. (Out here in the West, the sheriff shoot first, ask questions later.)
In NY (where I am from,) no front tinting is allowed. Though I got away with 20% tint in my old car.
In CA, no front tinting is allowed according to my CA friends.

That is correct RayGS3 & HarrierAWD, in California, no front tinting is allowed. Someone who i use to know had their front windows tinted and the police stop her and eventually she had to remove them because tinting in CA for the front windows is not allowed.
