I know that for the 330, the 4th digit is a "G" for 2WD, or an "H" for AWD.
This might be true for the 300 as well, but I'm not positive. I don't have any 2WD VIN's to compare to. My 99 AWD started with JT6HF10U, and my 02 AWD started with JTJHF10U. The 4th digit is still "H", so the pattern might hold. The "HF10U" part of the VIN would indicate the model and powertrain. (The first three digits are country/plant code.)
