I am considering buying a 1999 RX300 with 73,941 miles. It looks great and drives smoothly. Is there any reason I shouldn't consider this purchase (through an individual) or things I should look at very closely? Thanks for the tips! Also, if I make this purchase what modifications could I do (minimum) to upgrade such as 2003 model? Thanks big time!

Having got myself one last year, I would say it is a great car!
Ensure that you got all service records.
Ensure that it has been maintened regularly.
Ensure that the 60 K service has been performed. It would cost you around $900 for this service.
If I may ask, what's asking price?

tmcal, basically jassarafs covered it, tho the 60k mile service doesn't have to be $900 ($1300 here in my area when ours was due). Lexus Service depts all seem to routinely perform the rough duty service schedule, regardless of the owner's driving habits (see the owner's manual to determine what schedule you should be following). Nothing wrong with doing additional maintainence but to do more than the entire Toyota/Lexus engineering dept has determined is appropriate is merely stuffing the dealer's pockets. (The normal schedule cost here was $282 vs $1300.)
But oil changes on schedule ARE critical so verify those!! The service record for all Lexus- performed jobs is available via the VIN at any Lexus dealership.
And it IS a great car!! I bought one of the first in this area back in 98; the only reason we don't still have it is because SHE really liked the second gen when it came out. But I sold it to an employee at my clinic and she's had no problems well past 100k now.
Can't answer re mods, tho. Wives (mine, anyway) don't usually want their car messed with..........
