On a couple of occasions, I overheard them calling me a cheapskate
for tipping only $2. (this was at a major hotel chain in a major city)
Both times I was driving my RX. (no passenger, no bags)
Just curious...

Two bucks is plenty - I'll give 'em another buck or two if they have to park a long way off, or if the weather's bad. Hey, they're earning it.

I rarely use valet parking, and when I do I tip the same regardless of the car I'm driving. I tip based on what I think their service was worth, in some cases $2 and other times $5.

Tip
I don't let anybody drive my RX. Have some bad experience before with my X5 gave the guy a good "tip". Same attendant who park and pick up my ride told him take care of it. When I got home found some scratches on rear bumper. grrrrr.

Stayed at the Grand Wailea Resort for by birthday last year; tipped the guy $5 to park it in a nice place. (and it was, 'cause I had to go back to my SUV to grab something, and it was parked in 2 stalls, away from my worst enemies: trees, sprinklers & other cars!)

No matter which car I take, if there is valet service and I use it I tip the guys $5, unless they charge a fee for the valet parking then it depends on the fee.
On one occation when a bunch of local NSX owners got together for luch, I tipped the guy $10 since he let us stay in the parking lot as long as we wanted taking pictures and checking each others car out. Since I knew he was going to be cool about it I give him more money.

Went to the Grand Wailea last night again, to attend a Mitsubishi Electric group dinner where George H.W. Bush was a guest speaker (yeah, got to see my first president in the flesh!!), tipped the valet guy $5 again, and my RX was parked out front. I told him "no door dings and no sprinklers!"

I don't tip because nobody else drives my baby.
With a wood wheel that's easily dinged and having seen valets wheel out several times with other's cars- I will never let one in my car. Like MT, I walk the xtra distance after a drop off!
EDIT: I recently allowed one to park my Honda (original clutch!) - and I still feel bad about it!

I try not to valet park at all. If I have no choice, then I will pay $2. When in Las Vegas I pay $3 because those guys have to go waaay in the back to get a car. And I always tip at drop off and pick up.
True story: In college I used to work as a valet parking attendent at Gladstone's 4 Fish in Malibu. They made us RUN to get the cars, you couldn't walk. The uniform was a Gladstone's t-shirt and Dickie's shorts with tennis shoes and socks. At the end of the summer I had the funkiest farmer's tan. Also, most people tipped $1, but the majority gave us spare change, nickels, dimes, and if you were lucky, a whole quarter! I didn't make much money, but it was fun for a summer job.
