Do you need an exterior EZ-Pass (or Fast Lane(MA) or Smart Tag(VA)) tag for your RX or is an interior one acceptable?
I am anxiously awaiting my RX, and on the road today saw one that had the external license-plate mounted EZ Pass tag. I checked their website:
http://www.ezpassny.com/static/info/exteriortags.shtml
and not one Lexus is listed, but I just wanted to check the experience of this group.
Thanks...

The RX 300 required an external EZ-Tag - as you noted mounted on the front license plate. The "silver" metallic finish on the window tint blocked a good portion of RF energy from the interior of the car, creating havoc with aftermarket GPS products as well, particularly in the city. The RX 330 may not share that problem, but I simply moved my RFID to my new 330, called the EZ-Tag office, explained what I had done, and have never had a problem. I like the look better than that white card in the window anyway!

I have a Smart Tag, and in my '05 with NAV it is mounted right up against the headliner, directly to the right of the mirror. It almost fits completely within the pattern of the black dots on the glass and works just fine. I checked with a Smart Tag office here in Virginia, and that's where they told me to put it.

I have my Florida Sunpass transponder mounted next to the headliner and the right side of the rear view mirror. Only problem I had was keeping it up there. Ended up using some outdoors double stick tape. No problems at all.

I used interior EZ-Pass tag in my RX300 when I lived in NYC. Never a problem. No interference with the Navigation system, either. The Nav system always put me at exact spot in Manhattan.
I mount the tag behind the rearview mirror on the windshield, as recommended by EZ-Pass. I used a $3 mounting kit with suction cups because I didn't want the Velcro stickies on the glass.

I've never even mounted my Illinois Tollway I-PASS, which is the exact same unit as the EZ-Pass. Works fine from inside the car on both the RX300 and the RX330 at any speed. (Illinois has started implementing 55 mph express lanes at in-line toll plazas.)
When I get to the plaza, I pull it out of the center console and set it on the center of the dashboard. It would sit there very nicely in the RX300, but they changed the slope of the dash in the 330, creating a tendency for it to slide around if I don't slow down enough before putting it up there.

I recently sold my '99 RX and always had my EZ pass mounted INSIDE the windshield. In 3 years I never once had a problem with billing, etc. with the EZ Pass. I travelled all over NY Metro/NJ on a daily basis. My new '05 RX is coming this week and I'm mounting the EZ Pass inside again. I always worried about the external pass being stolen.

The local turnpike office required the external RFID on my RX 300 - and on a few other cars too - in early 2000 . . . I seem to remember the Town Car was another. At one time some TCs had an option for a heated windshield, in which a transparent metallic foil was embedded in the glass. I wonder if this supposedly affected the signal path?
Except for the old Dallas - Ft. Worth turnpike, Texas was pretty new to the toll road thing back in 2000 - they probably had very little experience with various means of extracting their tolls back then. Anyway, it cost me a few bucks extra up front to buy (rent, lease, borrow?) the external tag . . . probably the "Lexus tax".
I worried about having that RFID stolen too - until I tried to move it to the 330 - the license plate bolts had rusted up. I finally gave up and had the dealer do the swap . . . he had to drill 'em out! I guess cheap bolts with a light cadmium flash combined with our swamp-like humidity to provide all the security I needed!

Mounted my Florida SunPass on my RX-330 power moon roof. Right at the front inside on the glass. No problems at Toll Gates or sliding the moon roof back to open. And it's out of sight when the lower moon/sun roof cover is pulled forward. Works really good.

When we had EZ-Pass a couple years ago in the '99 we never mounted it but kept it in the glove box when not in use, then took it out and never had any problem cruis'n through the booths just holding the device or placing it anywhere in the cabin. Response on the monitors was always immediate.
