I have been using 91octane rating on my RX 300 since day one. I recently got my new RX 330 and I have been filling it up with the same octane. Now that gas prices are coming up like crazy, I am planning to switch to 87 octane on both vehicles. Can I switch right away with no harmful effect or do I have to do it gradually? Can anyone help?

I'd suggest you step down gradually.
Someone mentioned that you can pull a fuse to "reset the fuel map." I don't think it'll work, but you can try it if you want.

In your case, try fill mid-grade next time, then regular.
You can find the ECM fuse in the fuse box. It's located next to the battery. Pull it and leave it out for a minute (don't put key in the ignition of course.)

Ok, I finally pulled out my manual and read a bit into it. It does say that 87 and above is recommended. But using 91 or higher will improve performance (it's on the last page of the book). I wonder what that improved performance would be. MPG? Acceleration? An increase in the stock price of oil companies?

You'll probably notice the improved performance when you push the engine to the limit. I never drive like that so I stick with 87. I did use premium gas once just to see how it goes. I noticed no difference whatsoever.

I also tried premium in both my 00 and 01 RX. I could find no difference in mileage or even performance when I pushed it. You would think something would improve with my wallet being so much lighter. The FTC claims 6% of cars sold in US require premium, yet 20% of gas sales is preimum.
