Default RX300 high price of 90k service. This is the reason why.

RX300 1MZ-FE engine.

6 Iridium plugs $15 x 6 = $90
6 Iginition coils $100 x 6 = $600
3 wire igintion + direct fire coil = $60
timing belt and water pump kit = $250
engine and accessory belnts and tensioners = $55
thermostat, lube, radiator cap etc etc = about $50

those parts alone are about $1100. These prices are somewhat of discounted price as I searched for their prices on the net. I am not even taking account for things like fluid changes, alignment and rotation which the dealer does perform.

so there you go why it costs $1400 for the lexus 90k mile service.

You have a lot listed which is not part of 90k service. Plugs aren't due to 120K. There is also no need to change ignition coils, wire ignition and direct fire coil unless you are a service advisor trying to bump up the price so you can win that Disney trip.

so they are not changing plugs, wires, coils at 90k?

so what is it that they actually do?

You don't need to do all that for 90K service. The only required 90K maintainence item is the timing belt replacement. The dealer sure know how to make a buck.

The Iridium plugs only need to be changed every 120K miles. No need to change ignition coil or wire unless they are corroded - very unlikely.

I wouldn't worry about Lexus water pump at 90K, maybe change it at 180K. Change engine & accessory belts only if they were never changed as preventive maintenance. No need to change the thermostat and radiator cap unless your cooling system is gummed up and those components might be clogged - unlikely in a Lexus.

I thought it was standard wisdom to change the water pump since it was next to the timing belt and you were paying so much labor to get to that area of the car already for the belt. Is that an urban legend?

That standard wisdom applies to Ford & GM. I wouldn't bother at 90K for Toyota.

i would suggest getting the water pump replaced if you can save substantially on the labor. they do tend to leak around 120K or so at which point you would have to pay for the labor all over.

Do you have any further information about the wp leaking around 120k? I participate in many RX discussions and have never heard of even one wp leaking.
