Default My first Lexus 2001 RX300

Well I just purchased a 2001 RX300. I have never owned a Lexus before being a former GM tech for years, but my wife wanted something with a nice interior and reliable..two things GM is not known for

Anyway we looked at the Murano, and FX35, along with the Pacifica.. FX35 was really sweet, and so were the other 2. We also liked the RX330.

The reason we went used is due to my work just received a lease return and it was a 2001 RX300 AWDwith 68k. it has Navigation, really cool Nagazuki or something like that sound system etc. Black with tan leather.

Anyway I bid pretty low just for fun and actually got it for $18,500

First impressions are pretty good, even for being used. It still feels tight. The tires suck though and are OEM Bridgestone H/T's. I also have a hard start issue when cold sometimes, and might try cleaning the idle control valve. Anyone have any other suggestions on this??

And also I have heard about engine oil gummming up. I guess this is something I should also look into with 68k right?

Lexus has interiors down! The ride is not bad either. I hope it lasts awhile

Congrats with your purchase, it'll probably last a long time and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Changed to synthetic oil for engine longevity, if it helps with any gum issues so much the better.
Good luck!!

Default Lexus RX300 and Gumming

Yes, there was an engine oil gumming issue with the RX300 through most, if not all, of it's run. I believe Lexus extended it's warranty for engine carbon buildup to 8 years/100,000 miles, so if you should develop an issue, it should be covered. I'm not sure, but the warranty may require that you show proof that you changed the oil on the specified intervals.

I have 73K on my '99 RX and so far so good. I too bought it used, but it only had 44K on it at the time and I've used synthetic ever since.

The Lexus looks to be in very good condition. NAV is excellent... too bad it wasn't an option on the '99.

Thanks for the info.. Yeah, the NAV is pretty cool, but I already told my wife I do not need it.. (I never ask for directions, and don't need some stupid computer to tell me how to get somewhere ) She rolled her eyes made it clear we will use it on trips.

I got the NAV so I don't have to ask for directions. It's a really cool toy, you'll like it and wonder how you have driven all these years without it.

The oil gelling could occur if the oil was not changed at specified interval. Keep up with oil change and you'll be OK. In unlikely event that the oil does gel up, Lexus has an 8-year/unlimited mileage warranty on the engine oil gelling issue. So you are well-protected.

Enjoy your new ride.
