I just purchased a 2000 Lexus RX300 and was under the impression after talking to a few RX300 owners that I would get an average fuel economy in the mid 20's with split city/highway driving. I don't drive my vehicle hard and so far I'm only averaging 19-21 mpg. Is this about right for fuel economy? Is there anything i can do to increase the mpg on my vehicle other than the normal scheduled maintenance? And do I need to get out my hip boots when they tell me they're averaging mid 20's city/highway driving?

My wife's 2000 Rx300 FWD, 56,000 miles, averages about 16-17 MPG [ according to the computer ] while going to work and back daily. It's 8 miles each way and about half of the trip is city and the other half is expressway. We've never taken it on a long trip but friends of ours usually get 24-26 MPG on the highway with their RX300 FWD.

Maybe there's a variation in computer accuracy. I have a 2002 FWD RX300 and the computer shows around 20 mpg city and from 26 (highspeed w/ AC) to 29 (moderate speed w/o AC) on the highway. I'm known to have a light foot on the accelerator. I know this is higher than others report. I don't know why.

problem is that people dont measure their mpg correctly. A lot of people reporting high mpg are doing it for single trips (like driving 100 miles on highway alone), and not averaging their whole fuel tank.

When you average it out, it goes down a lot... I suspect any number when person says it is on "the highway"...


p.s. kind of funny that RX400h ppl are complaining about minimal 22 mpg while RX300 drivers are getting minimal 16mpg :-)...

i think, i got 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway with the RX300.

better than the 15/18 i have with the Gx now.....

Install SUN Hyper Voltage System, the LR model is good enough to increase mpg 2-5%, reduce rough idle, and increase HP/torque. Installation is 5 minute and the device will pay for itself in 15K-20K.

I agree with Tuned, get a grounding system. SUN makes an excellent system.


I don't gain much at my altitude on street driving, but since I added my own grounding wire system (I have 9 wires) I have been able to get over 20 mpg at 7,000 feet on highway trips out to the country. Not possible before. You may also notice brighter headlights, better sound (bass and background sounds are more pronounced) and better engine response. Oh yeah, your idle will be more stable and the gains in power are appreciable. Plus, with my Optima Red Top battery....need I say more.

One thing I did last weekend was to spray some carb cleaner into the throttle body for about a minute and then a light spray (not stream) of water. I alternated this 3 times for a minute. Car feels a lot better on the throttle after getting those carbon deposits out.

I just traded-in my 2003 RX300 FWD for the RX-330. The average MPH for the 28,500 miles was 21.7. I'm retired, so no back and forth to work, but I do travel on short 2-3 day trips.

How does everyone measure how well they're doing? One person mentioned that they should average their trips, rather than take their best trip, which might be all highway, and I agree. Really, the RX300 will probably do 18.8 mpg over the long haul. When I purchased my vehicle, the previous owner hadn't reset the trip computer for over a year and it showed 18.8 over that time and I know that it's been pretty much a 50/50 split between local and highway over that year. I use to reset every fill up and there would be 1 to 2 mpg variances between 18.8. I have not reset my computer now for over six months and it's averaging out to 18.8 again.

Look, if you're going to drive a SUV, you can't worry about fuel economy because it's just not a factor to consider. There is no economy when it comes to SUVs. Just MHO.

AWD or FWD makes alot of difference.

I have an AWD and I got 18.5mpg, about 70% city driving. I am really easy on the gas though. I haven't reset the computer for 3 month.

man, mhc0725,my rx330 is only a v6 and it burn more gas then the gx470 v8. don't you think some wrong with that. my brother gx is btw 16-17 mpg, and this stupid rx330 with a v6 use 15-16 mpg. what is wrong with that?

My 2002 RX300 AWD has 49,000+ miles on it. I average 24-25 mpg for my commute, which is 80% highway and 20% local road.

Its life average is only 21.8 mpg since I used to live in New York City. I used to get 17 mpg back there.

I have a Rx300 Silversport 01 with 55K. I Drive in NYC mostly. I fill up with 93. The Computer is telling me that im getting 13MPG thats with AC. Should i get it checked out>??

Why fill up with 93 when the recommendated range is 87-91? You probably paid more $ to get less performance out of your fuel.
