Default Console backlight issues

I have a 1999 RX 300, and I am having a problem with my console backlight. The radio/AC unit backlight no longer lights up when the headlights are turned on. I have tried new fuses, but they blow after a few minutes. I took it to the dealership, and they put in a new fuse. Their fuse lasted about 30 minutes before blowing. Has anyone else had this problem? They tell me it may be a short, but it would take them hours to find the short and fix it at $90/hr. Help me please!

Any recent work electrical or mechanical arond dash or electrical.

A non intrusive and simple variable would be reducing the the dash light intensity .. see if the fuse satys longer with the lights set at dim and pops quicker at higher settings.

No work has been done recently. I'll put a new fuse in and see what happens when I keep it dim. Any other suggestions. I really think the short is somewhere near the radio controls, but I don't have a clue how to take the radio out to check.

You may need a ‘console ash receptacle lighting assemble/harness.’ Carmax (yes, Carmax) put one in my 99 RX300. If not for the warranty, the cost would have been;

Labor - $82.00
Parts - $13.19

Good luck.

A hard failure is much easier to trace than an intermittant one. Things may be getting better for you.

edit: My mistake the orignal post was by a differnt person
