Default 2000 RX emergency brake light and ck engine light

I just found this web site and hoping to get some good advice. Check engine light is on, and from reading other posts, it appears that I can go to an autozone and have a sensor output a code and then get some advice here with the code number. Please confirm.

Secondly, emergency brake light has been coming on regularly when I start the car. Occasionally it will go off when I make a turn or go over a speed bump.

The vehicle has 140,000 miles on it and it has been a great car. I am hoping to hold onto it for at least another year or even longer if it remains reliable.

These symptoms point to low brake fluid level. Check that first. Also, if the fluid is low, it could because the brake pads have worn down (causing the brake pistons to extend more) and replacing the brake pads will bring the fluid up to the right level.

Smile Welcome to CL!

A CEL may indicate a "bad" oxygen sensor in the exhaust, or a Mass Air Flow sensor in the intake. These are the most likely causes of the Check Engine Light. If you can get the codes from Auto Zone or another parts house, there are those on this forum that can help interpret them and give you some ideas for replacing (or cleaning, in the case of the MAF) the sensor.

Good luck, and congratulations on your new Lex!
