hello, new to the forum! question about my 99 rx300 >>
i just picked up a 99 rx300 with 79K miles and it seems to be in pristine condition inside and out. however, the check engine light goes on and off sporadically. the car is very smooth and i'm getting pretty good gas mileage (approx. 20) so i don't think its the O2 sensors.
is there anything i can check myself before taking it to the shop? i usually like to diagnose things myself but i'm new to this car so i'm not sure where to begin. are there common reasons that this light would come on? i need to do the state emissions inspection soon so any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.

Autozone (and other Auto parts stores) will read the CE codes for free. Bear in mind, they are not diagnostics experts, so take their advice with a grain of salt. Post the code here and someone may provide you some direction.

Check engine code
I had a similar issue when I purchased my '99 2 years ago.
Dealer reset the codes and mechanic cleaned the gas cap seal and cautioned me to make sure it was always property closed before I started the car (upon filling tank of course).
I presume you know you are never supposed to fill the gas tank with the car running... on a car equiped with OBDII (newer than 1993)
Then again, when in doubt have dealer read codes and diagnose. If its your first time to a Lexus dealer and you mention it, I find they tend to try extra hard to leave a good impression...
Cheers,
Fern
