Default 2001 RX300 Should I flush the transmission 70k?

I bought the RX 300 used and I have no idea of the maintenance history. I was thinking of flushing the tranny fluid, but am worried if it might be a bad thing if it never has been flushed before since it has 70k on it. Should I just leave it alone? Or should I go ahead and flush it out? I have heard possibly it may make the tranny burn up if the old fluid is really worn.

Thanks

This has been discused here in the past. I live most of the year in the DC-area and I don't think you'll find a Lexus dealer in the DC-area that does flushes. Only Toyota dealers.

I'd be inclined to do several drain and refills, using the proper Toyota transmission fluid, over the course of a few months. I'd say that's being on the safe side. Why gamble with a power flush?

I believe the negative experiences have been with power flushes and not with the progressive drain and refill technique. Several people have described measuring the amount of fluid that drains out and putting that amount back in, with a funnel, through the dipstick hole. That way, you are not overfilling the fluid by mistake.

I once did a flush at Germain Lexus in Naples, Florida and no problems. However, drain and fill every 15K will do you right. I would not go just to any professional with a flush system.

Down here, I will have to drain and fill (3 times in 3 weeks) and can get Toyota fluid...and plan to measure what comes out and put exactly the same back in.

With worn fluid...do not flush...drain and fill and let the tranny ease into the new fluid.

As others already said, I would stay away from the flush. I think it is just a big money maker for the service provider and a possible risk for you. However, don't just ignore your trans. If possible, get a service history. Maybe a Lexus dealer did a drain and fill at 30 and at 60k in which case your in good shape. If you can't get a service history do a couple of drain and fills as suggested above. A proper drain and fill will get over 50% of the trans fluid out. Do a search on "transmission" on this forum for lots of info.
